Help! Musty smell in washer
Old 06-08-2022, 09:48 AM

I have an ďold-schoolĒ style washer; ie top load with center agitator. I love it. Itís a workhorse. I always (except when DH forgets and closes it) keep the lid open in between uses. However in the last 1-2 months Iím smelling something musty. My nose has traced the smell to the inside of the washer.

Does anyone know of any remedies? Iíve tried running an empty load with vinegar and water. It has only slightly helped. Short of taking it apart to get to the inside (can you even do that?? ) Iím stuck. TIA

I have the same type of washer.

I buy OxiClean or Affresh washing machine packets (there are other brands too):

I will try this, thanks! Do these work in your experience? I never tried it because I thought they were for front load washers.

Mine get that musty smell occasionally, even though I always keep the lid open, and these definitely get rid of it!

I bought washing machine cleaner pods. Theyíre okay. You have to be vigilant when using themÖ.as soon as itís done, you need to take a rag and wipe down the drum and under the rubber gasket.

I didn't know this. Do you know why this has to be done?

Keltikmom: Thanks for the tip. Curious, do you have a front loader? Iíve heard this about that type but not a top loader.

Lilbitkm: Thank you for the recommendation. I just ordered the Tide brand with Oxyclean. Target had it available for a quick pickup today.

I have a non agitator washer. I hate it. All darks end up with white streaks, itís because soap gets stuck to sides of drum and under the gasket. I canít wait for it to die.

I just ran the washer with the Tide w/OxyClean cleaner. The inside of my washer smells really clean and fresh Also the inside is shining like when I scrub my kitchen sink with Barkeeperís Friend. Iíll do it again in another week and then try 1x/month for maintenance.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to share your cleaning tips.
