My boys watched that show when they were little. I hated it. I didn't forbid them to watch it, but I couldn't stay in the room while it was on. I couldn't stand the whining, and the parents were so annoying.
Same here. I complained about his whining, too. DS 13 or 14 at the time had a theory about the show. He said that the show is done in memories from someone (it looks all fuzzy on the sides) and Caillou is bald because he has cancer and that is why all of the adults cater to him. I don’t know where he came up with that idea....
My grandson loved Calliou. My DD let him watch it but would hear the tv and just exclaim "Ugh! Bad parenting. There are techniques to stop the kid from whining. Learn to parent!"
I always thought it was because the producers of the show wanted to try and show how a child might act and react to things, then show how to handle it, but to me it's just encourages the children who are watching to act the same way.
"Daniel Tiger" was a good show for my grandson to watch. The episodes had Daniel react to certain problems and had him solve the problems. But again, that character could be whiny plus they had actually Growl when mad!!
For a while my grandson copied and growled when he was mad.
I think both shows give a preschooler/toddler the impression that it's OK to be whiny.
It reminds me of the comments some parents would make if their child was overly argumentative/whiny in school- " We want him to be able to express himself."
when he was little. He LOVED Caillou. Yes, he's whiny but I think what adds to the whininess is his voice sounds much older than what a 4 year old should be.
Anyway, DH and I just sat back and laughed at the ridiculous plots on Caillou. My favorite was when their neighbor broke her leg and so Caillou's mom leaves him there for the day to "help." Who would do that? 4 year olds don't help neighbors with broken legs. Even on the show, he made it worse by creating messes for the poor lady to clean up. Bwahahaha.
