If some of y’all remember, I posted several times about a violent student I have. As of last year, he’d bitten and scratched myself and my para on numerous occasions. We all thought it was a matter of time before someone really got hurt.

Well, my nose is now broken because of a head butt. IDK what the plan with him is now. If my job was an option for me (it’s not, I need the paycheck) I’d refuse to work with him because I’m not being provided a safe work environment when admin knows he’s violent.

No, long story short, I found out details about that job that would have made it no better than where I already was.

What kind of grievance could I file?

And, yup, already opened a workman’s comp claim. No way in h*ll am I paying for this.

Can you take any kind of paid medical leave?

I know this is not an option in a lot of places, especially if you need the job, but can you file a police report? I know this is a grade-school special ed student, but sometimes that needs to happen until administration steps up.

Our contract has language that if a student assaults you, teachers have the right to ask that they not return to your classroom. Often the police reports can make this easier.

Keep filing the workman's comp claims.

I worked in a district that had to get a different, more expensive workman's comp insurance policy because of so many claims relating to one student. That really open-end some eyes.

Are you in a union state? A few years ago admin wanted to place a significantly violent student straight from a specialized school into my room with no support. I got a union rep to come to a planning meeting and hold admin to specially detailing a plan to keep students and staff safe... and sped ended up placing him somewhere else. You might want to ask a union rep about filing a grievance about a safe work place.
