Settle a (stupid) disagreement with my father

My father thinks everyone puts mustard in their egg salad. I think thatís ridiculous and people donít put mustard in their egg salad.

So, do you put mustard in your egg salad? Or, do you make it the right way?

I think it's ridiculous that people eat egg salad. The mustard doesn't matter.

I always put mustard in egg salad. If it's just mayonnaise, it's way too pale and insipid. I'm on Team Dad.

I love egg salad! I hate mustard, but I'm ok with a squirt of it in there. Dh likes that. I put mustard in the mix for deviled eggs, so it's kind of the same thing.

So I'm on neither side I don't agree that everyone puts mustard in there, but I also don't agree that it's ridiculous and people don't put mustard in there

(but when I typically make it for me, I don't put mustard in there... sometimes mashed avocado, though! )

Coming back to add (because she makes me realize not all mustard is the same) only grey poupon or something similar in there. Never the yellow stuff, which should be abolished (but my mom would be sad)

I've definitely never made egg salad and I'm 99% sure I've never tasted it either. It's not something we ever had growing up nor do I ever remember it being at any sort of pot luck or anything like that.

On the rare occasion that I make egg salad, I put dijon mustard in. Without mustard, it would taste wrong.

I love egg salad (actually had it for lunch today), and I'm a purist: mayo and salt/pepper. That's it. NEVER mustard!

Although I do love mustard...just not in my egg salad.

Of course you put yellow mustard in egg salad, mayonnaise (never Miracle Whip), sweet pickle relish and a bit of the juice, chopped hard cooked eggs, onions, salt and pepper. Maine potatoes boiled skin on and then peeled and diced.

Sorry, GreyhoundGirl, we always put a bit of mustard in our egg salad. We also put a dash of garlic salt, regular salt, and pepper. To me, it's too bland without the added taste of the mustard.

I have to comment to Haley23. The way I know it, egg salad isn't really "salad" the way potato salad, pasta salad, etc. is at potlucks. It's basically a sandwich filling of chopped hardboiled eggs with mayo to use on bread or toast, though some people doctor it up more. It's the kind of thing you might have for lunch/dinner if you don't have much in your fridge - like making a grilled cheese sandwich or a PBJ. Back in the "olden days" they used to make "salad" sandwich fillings out of just about anything. My mom actually had a little manual grinder she used to turn leftover meats into "salad." (Note to self to look for that at her house. It'd make a great "bet you don't know what this is" item!) I really liked ham salad sandwiches as a kid. The only kind I make now are tuna salad sandwiches..

The only time I ever really made egg salad sandwiches was after Easter. My kids loved "Easter Egg sandwiches," but wouldn't touch "egg salad" with a ten foot pole! I usually use a bare minimum of mayo, and salt and pepper with the eggs. if I make other "salads" like tuna, chicken, etc. I add all sorts of stuff to make it crunchy and flavorful, but with eggs I'm a purist.

but so small I wonder why I bother--maybe a teaspoon?? maybe.... with at least 5-6 eggs and the mayo.

I don't put the onion, relish, or other bits though--just eggs, mayo, salt, and pepper with that tiny squirt of mustard.
