Itís true what they say- you go into auto pilot.

Due to Covid, my class eats lunch in the classroom. When their masks are off to eat, they arenít allowed to talk, just listen to music and enjoy their food.

I was at my desk and heard a really weird sound, and looked and saw one of my boys was turning purple. I ran over, asked if he could talk, and when he couldnít, I put my arms around him and gave him a thrust. A hunk of apple popped out.

The poor kid was really shaken. I got the AP so she could take him to the nurse to check him out.

Now, excuse me while I go buy some Miss Clairol. Phew! What a weird experience!

I know the rush of adrenaline you get when doing abdominal thrusts. I had to do it on a boy that was choking on a quarter. While I was doing it all I could think about was why couldnít he have just swallowed a dime. You are a hero!

Awesome that you saw him in time (and awesome it was quiet so you could actually find out early enough to help!) and remembered how to do it.

I had to do it once on my own daughter and I would agree, it was almost a reflex! I was shaken up afterward, though.

Wow! I'm glad you were there and able to apply the maneuver!

I did it once too on my own daughter. She was 10 or 11 and was chewing on the end of a pencil when the eraser got caught in her throat. When I did the Heimlich maneuver, the eraser flew out like a projectile and landed 10 feet away. We were both shaken up for a while.

How frightening!! And you are a true hero.

Also, from personal experience, be prepared for him to be emotional tomorrow. I choked once and had to apply the Heimlich to myself. The next day during a workout I completely fell apart.
