The teacher that made me want to be a teacher

Today I learned that my 9th grade home ec teacher (back when schools has home ec) is in home care hospice. She was the woman that made me want to be a teacher. Several years ago I saw her in the grocery store and she was just as fabulous as I remembered her. She saw my grocery list, took it from me, fished a red pen out of her purse, and wrote an A+ at the top.

As a piggyback to the cookie dough thread, my fondest memory of her was during the cooking unit when we made chocolate chip cookies. She came over to check on our group, told us that she really wasn't suppose to do what she was going to do, and popped a bit of cookie dough into her mouth. ("I love cookie dough!") That's when I found out that teachers are real people and I knew that I wanted to be a teacher like her.

Your story made me smile. I love the visual of her writing the A+ on your grocery list. I remember Home Ec too!

Sorry to hear that.

To me, her seeing you at the grocery store and writing that "A+" on your grocery list validated her feelings towards you as a successful adult!
I bet she was so happy that you stopped to visit with her!

Iím sorry that this shining example of a woman is so ill. May her path be made easier.

I loved your two stories. Itís always fun to hear stories about kids finding out we are real people.

Iím sure you canít visit her because of Covid, but it would be a wonderful gift to her family if you sent a card and included those memories. I bet it would make them smile. She certainly fulfilled her mission, and touched so many lives.

Thanks for sharing. We all want to make a lasting, good impression!

What a lovely memory to share about your home ec teacher.

I'm surprised schools don't do home ec any more, it is so important for both sexes.
