I want to integrate reading and writing poetry. I am thinking of guided reading poetry groups. Has anyone every done this? How do you run your reading time incorporating poetry?

I usually do mine by having the students write poetry about a book they've read...story pyramids, list poems, acrostics, etc...

We usually read poetry as a class because there is so much room for interpretation.

If you are running your reading workshop unit on poetry, you will have kids reading poetry independently while you are taking groups. You could do poetry within your guided reading groups of course. But kids will get their daily dose during their independent time. You could also have poetry centers for kids to rotate through during their independent time. If you are thinking that this can work check out Georgia Heards book Awakening the Heart for ideas. Hope that helps!
