Clip to ScrapBook #1

Our school district has a librarian shortage so, they have approved teachers to be librarians. I have always been interested in being a librarian but haven't had the money to go back to school to get my MILS. My principal knows this and selected me to be the librarian for the upcoming school year. I start next week. So, this is where it would be a good idea to have that degree...I have NO IDEA where to start. He wants me to make sure I get AR up and running. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should begin? It's a K-5 school. Kids don't start until the end of August, teachers the middle of August. I was thinking of pulling a variety of age appropriate books for kindergarten students and setting them on a table for them to check out, especially in the beginning of the year. Our school doesn't have a lot of parent support so I want the books to be ones they can "read" themselves. Any suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I'm a teacher librarian, and love it. I am constantly busy, my library is a welcoming place for students and staff-even the kids who just want to hang out (I'm in a middle school).

First-get to know the OPAC/circulation system. This will allow you to look up titles and check in/out books, do reports such as over dues and collection stats that you need to maintain an up to date and relevant library collection that supports both students and staff. Teach how to use it students so they can find books on their own-this really empowers readers, especially reluctant and struggling readers.
Join your state's school library association. You don't yet have a library degree, so this will be a life line for you. Join the ALA/AASL, they have great on line resources. LM-NET is a librarians lis serv that's full of info. get to know the public librarians-I have a great relationship with our public library that's been successful for students, staff and parents.
Get to know your collection, both print and on-line. Shelving the books and keeping them in order is a great way to learn the collection Don't make any major changes untill you've been in the position for a school year-traffic flow is important so watch how the kids and staff use the library and make notes of what works and what needs tweaking.
Find an experienced school librarian (with library degree) to mentor you.
Subscribe to some of the professional journals such as School Library Journal, Knowledge Quest, and since you're at the elementary level-Library Sparks-this is a fantastic resource for elementary school, lots of lessons and ideas and worth getting.
As far as putting books out, I do all kinds of displays, lots of different themes. I have a genre of the month, I display books that support the classrooms curriculum, I might create a display of books with certain words in the title, or color, author, topic/subject, "if-you-liked try this book. creating these displays is one of my favorite things to do. Book selection for students is all about free choice-what interests you today. Elementary kids will take out books they can't read yet, I used to teach them the five finger rule, but I also encouraged their curiosity-if the books to hard-bring it back and try another.
And post here as often as you need to!

Some of the professional organizations offer scholarships to students-apply for them!
