A.R. Theme ideas!

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi Everyone!
I am in charge of planning Accelerated Reader activities for the year. I like to choose a theme every year.
So far I have done:
Sports
Camping (Camp Out with a Good Book)
Reading Road Trip
Amazing Reading Race
Take a Bite out of a Book (ocean)
This year I am thinking about a carnival or theme park theme, western cowboy theme, or space.
Any ideas? Or new themes?

This is my first year as librarian and my principal wants to make sure I get AR up and running. Can you please explain your Accelerated Reader activities? I don't even know how to get it up and running!!!

Jealous!

I am so jealous of your school for having AR. Our school district discontinued it. Too expensive and encouraged too much competition between students. :-(
I loved it, and the kids in my class were only in competition with themselves.
They loved it, and I felt that it was very beneficial.

Anyway, to answer your original question, here are a couple of theme ideas that our librarian used in the past:
Reading Can take You Anywhere
(emphasis on reading fiction and n/f books set in different locations, with a world map and a US map posted. They had pins stuck into locations of books read, with a key to show the book for each pin.)

Reading is sweet!
(quarterly chocolate treats for kids who met their AR reading goals: Hot cocoa and cookies in winter, fudgcicles another time, etc.)

I am back! Inservice days started and I got really busy but I wanted to update you all on my progress.
I chose an alien /space theme for this year. I will use Reading is Out of This World! and Take Me to Your Readers!
I found a ton of colorful alien decor ideas on Pinterest. My local JoAnn store had a great alien bulletin board set, too.
I will kick off the year with a schoolwide assembly to introduce the theme. I also have a session during their library class to further explain the goals and how our books are labeled.
I make a chart that shows all of the point goals and prizes they can earn. Most of my teachers hang the chart on their classroom to motivate the kids.
I plan to look for some fun alien prizes on Oriental Trading and plan some fun activities like Cosmic Clothing Day where we dress like an alien, astronaut, or space cadet!
Let me know if you have more questions and have a great year!
