Any ideas or strategies for helping a four year old boy with language. He is interested in cars but when asked what center he wants to play in he says "Block". When asked Why? he says "Fun", any ideas on strategies to help him speak in complete sentences.

A simple strategy that has worked for me is to provide a few simple sentences that you might expect him to say. For example, When responds with, "Block," as his Centers choice, you could respond, "I want to play blocks," or "with blocks" and try asking him to repeat it. Do it regularly and just wait. He may not be ready to respond in full sentences yet, even though he's capable.

You can make the center choices visual (with words underneath). You can point to and say the name of each choice. He can point to his choice. Do not force him to say it. You can model and wait expectantly, but if nothing, just repeat with pointing and let him play with his peers.

You can have puppets model how to say the choices, possibly with a sentence strip with PECS or other pictures above for each word.

He needs to be referred for SLP evaluation.
