I am getting ready to start the National Board process and am struggling with which standard to choose, as I am a Gifted Education Specialist (with my certification add on) BUT am not an SPED teacher in terms of having taken a ton of classes on the other end of the special education- I've only taken classes on gifted education. So, do I go with Generalist, or with Exceptional Needs Specialist and then choose Gifted and Talented as my pathway? I'm slightly confused because I know nothing about things such as speech and hearing, autism, Title 1, ect. I know about gifted services and things surrounding gifted education, the history of gifted education, etc.

You have 2 other choices: Generalist (Early Childhood or Middle Childhood) where you'll show lessons in writing, math/science/and or SS or the Literacy certificate that focuses on reading, writing, speaking, listening, and visual literacy. Unless you're departmentalized, almost any classroom can fit those certificate areas.

As to the ENS certificate, for C2, 3, and 4, you use your classroom kids whoever they are. Everything will pertain to them and only them, you won't need to worry about some of those other categories you mention.

Where that WILL affect you is on C1. You will choose the Gifted/Talented pathway, I am not clear whether ALL the C1 exercises will focus only on the G&T pathway or whether some of the Selected Response prompts could include other areas. The 3 Constructed Response Exercises will focus on G&T.

Hope this helps.
