I am wondering if you do this in your library:

I was at the town's public library and noticed that they cataloged and grouped certain books together to make finding them easy.

For example: Every version about the story Cinderella was shelved under Cinderella instead of the author's last name. So someone looking for every book written about Cinderella would be found quickly.

They also group books with Disney characters under "Disney." All classics were shelved together.

I just never realized what a great idea this would be.

What do you think?

Hi Cakepop,
Yes, this is called Genrefication and is how a lot of libraries are being set up to now. It is like going to a book store instead and is easier for people to find what their interests are. Im opening a new school and my library will be set up like this and I am so excited for it.

This set up allows students to go directly to the genre they like to read and find a book by perusing the shelves, instead of going to a computer looking through a directory and then figuring out where the book is, especially if your library is not easily laid out for fiction and nonfiction.

I donít like it! I look up a book and go to where it is supposed to be. When I finally ask, I find there is a spot where it has been moved to a collection. Why does it not show the collection in the electronic catalog? I have wasted a lot of time sometimes by these groupings.

Our school library has more groupings than anything else. I have to ask every time. Like I said, we have a catalog, so why is it not updated in there?

I can definitely understand your frustration Kahlua and that has been the topic of discussion in our circle about how if this is the way of the future it needs to be set up completely before execution. We use Follett for our library needs and the catalog system is called Destiny and Follett has added the function of being able to distinguish where the book is by matching genres or collections.

I would be extremely bothered if that wasnít available and would not set up my library without that availability for the genre sectioning.
All parts must be there first before moving forward in my opinion

I like the idea, but my school librarian use to put these plastic tags in the shelf whenever she removed a book to a "display" like that - so if you happened to go looking for it by author, you were re-directed and could still find it.
