Today was the first of three early release days before the last day this Friday, so I wasn't expecting an involved lesson plan, so what I got was surprisingly ridiculous.

Upon entering the classroom. all I saw were instructions for the first hour for students who needed to finish testing. There was no other plan, so I was going to improvise.

Then just before the 5th grade students arrived, I accidently find the plan buried under papers and a clipboard.

Under the plan were mountains of module and assessment math papers torn out from the Eureka math program textbook, that the students said they did not even use. My instructions for each assessment was to " Do together".

This math program is highly detailed with complex lessons and specific methods of presentation.
Yet I was just given seven pages copied off to be given to each student with no answer key, and only instructions to do together.

These questions were not all easy, and required calculations with large numbers, and some problems required rulers. Of course there were no calculators and no rulers in the class.

It was very presumptive of the teacher to assume I knew how to do these problems. Two of them I could not do. One involved figuring if pouring a given volume water from a cylinder would fit into a given rectangular prism without overflowing. I just didn't remember this stuff.

I was to do all these problems with the students for three and a half hours from 9 AM until 12:45 with only a recess break.

The class focused pretty well for two and a half hours, then understandably some burned out.

This was probably just filler work since the students were done for the year.

It certainly was not a wise choice for filler work.

I'm lucky that math teachers where I sub know my lack of math ability. Our sixth graders were working on volume and figuring it out. There is an app that I downloaded. It's called Photo Math, I think. I can check. Take a picture of the problem, and it gets solved. That way, I can at least check to see if kids are doing it right. It doesn't do word problems, though.

Yep...I had a similar experience just last week. The 2nd grade teacher left 2 days' worth of math, ELS, and science "packets" that were pages she had the students tear out of workbooks. The lesson plan instructions were to have the students work on these packets ALL DAY!

After a couple of hours, they were already getting very grumpy. By the end of the day, they were on the verge of mutiny! The next day's sub had the same thing in store for her (I was just glad I wouldn't be there).

What on earth was this teacher thinking????

Worst lesson plans ever were the Disney “enrichment” pages, princesses for girls - “Cars” for the boys, copied out of books purchased at Walmart.

The lesson plans themselves were in that “curlz” font in MS word and included a series of admonishments for the substitute teacher; do not allow the children to be disruptive - it’s not fair to me when I come back and have to spend 2 days getting them back in line was one.

This could be worse than than the 4th grade lesson plan I had that said the kids were to work all day on individual and group projects.

I had a 5th grade class where we were to read aloud a horrendously long story in one hour, and I had to do it for 2 classes. We did it but I would never do it again. I've been subbing for so long and am still learning what is im/possible and what I'm willing or not willing to do.

Your plans were laughable and horrible at the same time. And this line from Subman: "included a series of admonishments for the substitute teacher; do not allow the children to be disruptive - it’s not fair to me when I come back and have to spend 2 days getting them back in line was one," is beyond belief.

I get a lot of joy from subbing but some things I read on this board infuriate me! Good luck to all of us!

Wow Sirsubalot, that is crazy. I’ve had some scanty lesson plans that I’ve had to stretch to fill the time, but your experience takes the cake.

SubMan wins the prize for experiencing one of the most ridiculous lines I’ve ever read on a lesson plan: “...do not allow the children to be disruptive—it’s not fair to me when I come back and have to spend 2 days getting them back in line”. Of course, the Curlz font was a big clue. Yeesh.

Thank goodness most teachers wouldn’t pull these stunts on a sub.

If you google the specific lesson for Eureka's math (ie - Eureka math grade 5 module 4 lesson 19) you will find youtube videos that explain how to do the homework. You will also find Eureka's site that has the answer sheets as well. This has been a life saver for me when I've forgotten how to do something.

First off, let me preface this by saying I hate subbing math.

Second, I also hate when there's no answer key. You'd think teachers would want to leave one. Many do not surprisingly. They assume you know how to solve every problem.

That being said: Sometimes lesson plans are very helpful, other times they read like instructions written in a different language. The worst is when you get two sentences to work with though. "Do math, send bad kids out." Stuff like that.

This is valuable for teachers who can plan in advance, but in my case, there was no computer access, and no time to plan if one was available
