How common is this at your school? It happens to me quite a bit. I received an email that a sub accepted my job on Thursday. I had to get into the system to see that it's school business. I have no idea what it is or where it is. I guess that's not important.

As a sub...

I can tell you that sometimes I will pass by a teacher in a hallway, and casually say, “Looking forward to being in for you next week.” There will be a blank look on the teacher’s face. Turns out the secretary has put in jobs for an entire grade level, and the teachers find out why later in the day.

That happened to me the week before last. Very frustrating, especially at the beginning of the year when things are still chaotic with scheduling and routines.

This would happen periodically at my school. Our secretary was Johnny on the spot to make sure we got the “good”subs.

That happened to me at the end of last year. My P casually mentioned about me being out the next week for our field day and my plans for the sub, etc. and I did a double take. What??? I hadn't put that into the system I wasn't planning on being out. Luckily, it was far enough out that my P canceled it for me. Union prez never got back to me about who put it in the system because it was not our building secretary.

Attendance counts on our eval so now I watch the paycheck attendance. Have never had to do that before.

I’ve never had that happen. They tell us we have a meeting such as a data dialogue day and we then have to get our own sub.

I've not had this happen in advance, but on the day, or second, I'm expected somewhere. A sub will walk into my room while I'm teaching and we have an awkward staring contest for a moment. When I ask how I can be of help, I'm told they are a roving sub and are covering for me. An IEP or SST was scheduled and I, the teacher, was accidentally left off the invite thread.

This has happened about 4-5 times in the past 5 years.

This has never happened for me! We put our own sub days in and I don't ever remember a "surprise" that the secretary took care of for us. I might forget I have a day coming up if a sub says something to me before I have worked on my plans and I put the day in early, but I knew about the day at some point.

we have collaboration or data days, and the secretary has to arrange a sub that will cover several teachers for 45 minute chunks....she puts in the sub for one person because there's no way to do it the other way.

We have to put in for our own individual subs, so I knew what they were there for. With shared subs, such as if the office sent for them because one grade level might have PD in the morning and another in the afternoon, the office did take care of those. We didn't get individual notification that a sub accepted the job, the office just assigned them and took care of the paperwork.
