I'm at a Units of Study training and she's good, but she's talked at us for the last hour and apparently her plan is to continue talking to us for the next 2 hours. I can't even.

I'm so over being talked to at trainings. If I taught like this I'd be fired. And I get to do this again this afternoon and all day tomorrow.

I go back and forth on that one because, on the flip side, I dislike being treated like a kid. When I taught teachers, I tried to mix it up with lecture/activity/discussion, but itís tricky to find the right balance (just as it is when teaching kids).

And Iím probably defending her because I LOVE units of study.

I hope it gets better for you.

I don't mean this in a rude way AT ALL, but what would the ideal training be like? Being talked at can get old, but I also see teachers often say they get tired of being forced to do activities and work in small groups as if they are kids. What would be best?

I don’t necessarily mind being talked at, especially when the presenter is good and knows her stuff like this one did, but I hate being forced to sit for 3 hours without a break. I think that was my biggest issue. At least let us get up for 5-10 min every hour or so.

I remember hearing in my teacher ed classes how important it is for kids to get up and to move around or at least change activities very frequently. And then the professor would make us sit for 2+ hours listening to him/her talk. Ugh!

The last PD we did, my school sat together and filled out the observation form we use at school on the presenter. She ... didn't do well at all.

I don't know how they get away, year after year after year, with methods that would have any of us strung up by our toenails in the principal's office.

And I hate being forced to take a break. I loved the Sisters model of 7 hours of training and you're responsible for taking your own breaks except for a 30 minute lunch (which I still thought was too long - I preferred the working lunch of a Units of Study workshop that I went to). They put speakers in the restrooms and positioned the snack tables so that there was space to stand up and get a snack while still listening. It was perfect. People can take a break when/if they need it and no instructional time is wasted on milling around for 5, 10, or 15 minutes.

If she has 3 hours of material, giving a 10 minute break every hour adds another 20 minutes to the session. I'd rather go home. Three hours really isn't that long for adults, imo.

I hate that. I always think there has to be a happy median between subjecting adults to think-pair-share and cross-the-line crap versus lecturing for hours without a proper break. I always resent the idea that someone is basically reading content to me when I could simply read it for myself.

I had an admin a long time ago who was notoriously brutal with classroom walk throughs and teacher appraisals. No teaching was ever dynamic or engaging enough for him. Teachers needed to try harder to incorporate newer and more progressive techniques. Then he'd stand up at staff meetings and PD sessions and drone on in a nasal monotone, frequently reading off PowerPoint slides. Apparently he had taught the same way as a Geography and Social Studies teacher before his promotion to AP. He would have failed his own teacher appraisals. Do as I say, not as I do.

Maybe I’m in the minority... I would rather a lecture style PD. I hate when they are interactive or when I am being treated like the student and having to do activities.

If I need a break or need to go to the restroom I have no problem creating my own break and walking out for a few minutes. I’ve stood in the back during long meetings in my school before and have no problem doing if needed.

I’m all about get it done and let me go about my day though.

Iím on the side of preferring lecture style PD with taking my own as needed breaks.

Last year I went to traffic school and even the cops running it told us, ďWeíre here for 6 hrs (including 1/2 hr lunch) If we give you breaks itíll be 6 1/2 hrs. Youíre adults, if you need to get up/stretch/use the restroom, just do itĒ.

As my grandfather said...I'm three times seven. Meaning I'm an adult and can make my own decisions. I get up and take a break whenever I need/want to. But whole group breaks are nice.

Sit & Get is my favorite kind of PD. Just give me digital or printed materials and a comfortable seat to go with it.

We've had tons more PD lately due to a new literacy initiative. The lady drives me crazy. On the one hand, yes I am someone who resents doing children's activities. Don't make me do an icebreaker or act something silly out or build a stem bridge (yes, all things we've done before). BUT, I don't want to sit there for 7 hours and just listen to you drone on either. Especially when the content is 100% something I already know.

IMO the best PD is where information is presented in small chunks with time built in to talk to teammates about how you'll use said information and/or actually plan something with said information. Not "go find a new friend and do some silly sharing activity," but actually having time to talk with the people you'll actually be working with on whatever the "new" thing is.

The kicker for the recent thing that I've been doing is that they split it up by grade level, but they made sped attend every grade level's session. It was literally the exact same power point. I've now seen it three times. Now there is a special day just for sped and intervention next week. I told my teammate that if it's a 4th time with the same power point, it might be worth getting fired to just get up and walk out .

This exactly. I agree with previous folk-no ice breaks and moving around the room to find a new partners or do a gallery walk. JUST NO.

But time to talk and digest with my actual team now and then and hear from them how they think it could applied-now that has value and doesnt over load me.

I prefer this over the presenters who do literally one sentence per slide, and then force teachers to move around and discuss. What do I end up learning at those? Nothing. :/

When it was clear that this is how things were going to go in a PD class I would frequently move to the back of the room where I could stand and not be in the way. If I was called out on it, I would tell the presenter "I'm a teacher, I'm not used to sitting for long periods of time."

I am one that prefers the information be given without any extraneous activities. If I need a break, I take one. I stand in the back, or go to the bathroom, or leave the room and walk around.
I'm an adult, and I will act (respectfully) like one.

Count me in as one who doesn't mind being talked at. It is better than being forced to do interactive activities that are a complete waste of time. I get up and take breaks as needed. I don't like sitting for long periods of time.

I also hate being forced to take breaks. When I need to go to the restroom, I would rather just go then wait in a line in the bathroom at the appointed time.

I would also rather work through lunch and get out of there sooner. On our PD and in-service days, we already have an hour and fifteen minutes for lunch. So we go out and it's a huge hassle to get back on time.

Also, I honestly don't have a problem sitting for that long. I don't want to group up or do silly "fun" activities like write a rap or make a skit. They are not fun, they are painful for me. Now I do have some co-workers who cannot sit still for that long. One guy will get up and pace. Ironically, every time I see him teaching, kids are sitting there listening to him at their desks...

Now it seems like a lot of our PD is online and we have to complete it on our own time. Not idea either but I guess we must be "professionally developed" constantly.

Personally, I'd rather be talked at than have to do the small group activities. I hate those. I actually learn quite well from a lecture format and always preferred classes that were just lectures. I would like a break in there somewhere, though. I absolutely hated it when we had to do the Kagan training, although I used it a lot in my classes. Kids are different than adults and do benefit from small groups, moving around, activities, games, etc.

We don't need cutesy activities, but we do need processing time in between all that information.

That would spread out the bathroom breaks, too.
