I want to start a poetry workshop once a week with my kids. I teach 5th and would love any suggestions.
Thanks so much!

Do you want them writing their own poetry or reading other works for certain emphasis?

Sometimes I want to work on a specific skill or I want them writing a certain type of poem. Other times I just want them to interpret and learn how to read poetry.

Start by reading Love That Dog. It is about a boy who thinks poetry is for girls. It is a short and easy read, plus very worth while.

Use poetry for reading response.

Use poetry for practiced readings to foster fluency.

Write poetry starting with easy success oriented recipe poetry writing, like a Bio Poem.

Try poetry spelling. All the words come from the poem.

Find poems that make connections to what you are studying in science, social studies or math. Or poems that make connections to other literature your class is enjoying.
