Best picture books for fluency

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I wrote a grant to buy picture books for my third graders to use to improve fluency, (not speed) and expression. They will tape themselves reading the book and create an activity to go with the book. I already have a lot of the standard picture books and I'm looking for the really unusual ones to add to our student made listening library. Any ideas? Thanks.

How about Double Trouble in Walla Walla by Andrew Clements? It is a humorous story mostly due to the word choice. It has lots of nonsense words of expression like hubba hubba and ring a ding ding.

My third graders always love it and it sounds better when you read it faster which takes practice.

Attached you will find the reader's theater for this picture book.

Also look at Jabberwocky. It is a poem by Lewis Carroll. It is also filled with nonsense words. Grame Base has a picture book illustrated version. It will work well for fluency, expression, visualization (read without the pictures) and context clue work.

Thanks, this one will definitely be one that I buy. I think the child that gets to tape this books will really enjoy all of funny words. Do you have any other suggestions? I have been searching Amazon and reading the excerpts that some books provide. It takes a long time but it gives me a feel for the book.

I'll check to see what I already have. It is a small grant that has to
s-t-r-e-t-c-h to get as much as I want. Thanks! You are always a great resource.

Just discovered a hilarious book with plenty of nonsense words called Hippospotamus by Jeanne Willis and illustrated by Tony Ross!
