Collection Suggestions

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi everyone. I am the new library media specialist at a school that was consolidated from 4 smaller schools around 15-20 years ago. 90% of the books in the library are made up of books that were brought from those schools. Some of them are classics and I can keep. However, most of them are outdated and I need to purchase updated titles, especially in the non-fiction section. Right now, I have a total of around $3,000 to spend. It's not a lot, so I need to get the most for my money. Can anyone give me some suggestions on popular items in your library that would get me off to a good start? I should have more money to spend at the end of the fall and again at the end of spring after my book fairs. Thank so much!
Jeanna

It would help to know what grades you cover. In the mean time, check out the Orbis Pictus Awards, The National Council for Social Studies, recommendations from the professional library journals, and other literary awards. Don't forget to keep your school's curriculum in mind.

You know, I always thought it would be nice to own the books from the mensaforkids.org list. They have a collection of book titles that a proper student is supposed to have read before completing formal education; plus, they have various grade levels, so it's really helpful.
