I've been out of the classroom for 4 years working as a behavior specialist. I'm looking to make a change and I have an interview for what I thought was a literacy coach position, but I'm not so sure anymore. Anyhow, the principal wants me to teach a 40 minute reading lesson. The last grade level I taught was 3rd grade however I've been working in the high schools for the last few years and I have gone blank. Please give me ideas on a great 40min 3rd grade reading lesson for this interview. Thanks in advance!

You could do main idea and details or cause and effect.

I didnfact and opinion for mine but my lesson was only 20 minutes.

Here are some poems I have used for inference. I print them and have the students do them in partners, then we read them and tell why we think it is about ______. One the board we look and see if we are right. If by chance you decide to do this, I will share the file of the poems in google docs. PM me if you want that.

Readworks.org has some good lessons you can search by standard and level.

Author's purpose works well with third graders. You could model through some excerpts of children's books or short texts, give them some guided practice where they could turn and talk after making a decision as to what type of purpose they think the author had, and then when they go to their seats to read independently, you could have them record what the purpose was of the text they are reading and why. Main Idea & Key Details

Oh geesh! I should look at the top dates *face palm*

Here’s what I do...

Hook:
Show these objects: bag of flour, a mixing bowl, whisk, rolling pin.
Ask: What do these objects have in common? (Kitchen/cooking)What could they be used to do/make? (To bake).
Explain: The main idea (purpose) is baking but all these objects (details) were clues to help us understand / figure out the main idea.

Look:
I would also have pictures in bags for groups/pairs. They would look at the pics. For example: baseball glove, cleats, hat, baseball, jersey. They would have to be detectives to figure out the main idea. We’d do a quick pair/share & whip around whole group.

Book:
Then I’d hand out & read a short paragraph with them about an animal (I have these great animal main idea/key details non-fiction paragraphs with a graphic organizer that I got from TPT. They’re super quick as practice or formative assessment). I’d model reading, underlining key details, filling out the graphic organizer together whole group.

Took:
Same animal paragraph resource (different animal/text). Have students read & complete independently. I’d circulate, check-in, model correction.

Closing:
Have students share what they underlined for key details. Share the conclusion of the main idea. Reward hard work with stickers, high fives, etc

This might be more than you wanted but I’m home with my baby now. Can you tell I miss teaching
