One of our math standards is this:

Find the number that makes 10 when given a number from 1 to 9.

Some of my kids can figure it our very quickly, but the kids that can't I'm not sure how to help them or if there is a better way or method to help those kids. I wish I had more 1 on 1 time to help them, but there is SO much to help these kids to grow.

Any suggestions for me to help my growing learners? Thank you so much!

One of the ways I reinforce this is by playing Snap It. Take 10 unifix cubes in a "train" and snap it somewhere. Hide each part in your hands. A kid chooses a hand and sees 3. They must then guess what's in your other hand (7). After you model it, the kids can play in pairs.

It's old school, but it works!

Snap it is a great game! I also use good old fingers. Put up the number that is given, and the fingers that are still down are the amount they need to make 10.

We also use 10 frames a lot for this. I think the visual is really helpful for those growing learners.

All good suggestions-ten frames, cubes, and fingers.
I use all of those as well as 2 sided counters, bear counters where some are hiding in a cave, and beans. Lots of hands-on counting before the kiddos can verbalize what makes 10. We sing lots of counting songs too.

I do some of these, but guess I need to do them regularly. It's the end of the year crunch! Off to investigate songs!

Same as previous posters-cubes, ten-frames, fingers, bears in a cave...

We also use the two color counters to play a game-Ways to Make 10. We put the counters in a container and shake them. Then spill onto the table. We count how many red and how many yellow. Then write the equation. Once students know how to do it, it goes into a math station. Students can play it individually or with a partner.

We make a Friends of 10 Rainbow. I googled an image to give you an idea of what it looks like. Mine is a little different. We use a number line, 0-10. We draw arcs to pair the numbers:0-10, 1-9, 2-8, 3-7, 4-6. We circle the 5 and say that 5 has itself as a partner.

We do a rhythmic game. Students slap their legs 2x. They clap 2x. We snap fingers on right hand as I say the first addend. Then we snap the fingers on left hand as they say the second addend. Repeat.
