Why?!?

I know this post probably belongs more on the VENT board, but kindergarten teachers will really be able to relate.

Why do young children care so much about line order? I know that kid who always pushes her way into line where she wants to be is cutting. Trying to get her to move takes way more time and arguing than is
worth it. Let's just go already. Nothing fun happens until we all get there anyway.

20 more days.

I know--drives me crazy! I started calling them to line up by saying "If your name has a J in it, line up." And I call the pushy ones' letters last.

My students all had numbers and lined up in numerical order with the “student of the day” always being the line leader. Sometimes I would turn everyone around and the end of the line kids would be at the beginning.

They actually loved it because there was never a question about who stood where and everyone got a turn to be line leader. I loved it because there was no running or pushing and I could tell at a glance if someone was missing from the line.

I think we can all definitely relate! It always seems so insane to me that it's a big deal. It's not even about who they are standing by, just where in line they are. Some years I have to resort to a line order, which I don't like but if it decreases the bickering I'll do it!

I have always had number line order with a student helper of the day being first like pooh bear. This cut down on many management snags and taught a few skills as well.

It wouldn't matter when I called this little girl. She has very poorly developed social skills. The other kids will only tolerate her so far, but she keeps pushing. I worry about her as she continues on.

I had a kid last year who always ran to be first. So we established that he could always be second. about killed him. Now this year he is across the hall. This week he almost ran me over one day. Next time he goes past me like that, he is marching back out the building and will be last coming in.

I have middle schoolers who act that way! No, we don’t line up, but there are always a few who run into the room trying to be first. Why? There are assigned seats, so there is no advantage to being first. Then there are the kids who try to push their way past the others when class is dismissed, often the same “first” kids. 6th grade is worse than 8th, so hopefully they’ll outgrow it by the time they get to high school.

The first few times I had line pushers...

I just flipped the line around. So basically, if you pushed your way to the front, now you were at the back. Sometimes I flipped, sometimes I didn't. After a while they gave up trying to outsmart the line order and just got in line anywhere.

Try giving her the "job" of caboose and put her at the end. Maybe if it has a title she will think it's special and will stop worrying about where she is.

It amazes me why it matters so much to some kids and others are so mature and will say "It doesn't matter where you are, we are all going to PE (etc)".

Good luck!

Line Order

I always have my class line up in ABC order according to last name. I just tell the kids that we always line up in line order. There is no such thing as skipping because everyone has a spot. If someone joins the line late they get in their spot.
