Having a baby over 35

DH and I have decided to try for another baby. We've been TTC for 2-3 months. I'm 34 (will be 35) in July. We have a 4 year old son. All that is going through my mind is that magic number "35". I keep thinking what if there is a birth defect or what if we've waited too long for it too happen. How many of you were over 35 and became pregnant? Am I worrying about these things for nothing?

I had my second child at 37. Know that the doctors will mark you as AMA Advanced maternal age. I had my first child at 34 -- 2 months short of being 35. I had two healthy children. Drs reminded me continually that I was AMA. So just be aware they will watch for more than on your first pregnancy.

All this seems like it is in the distance past as I have a 13 year old and an 11 year old.

May you have a uneventful pregnancy resulting in a helathy child.

Well I'm single and almost 31 so I'll definitely be over 35 by the time I have kids. I won't be letting my age stop me from my lifetime dream of having kids.

Anyway, several women in my family have had kids over 35. My maternal grandma had my mom and aunt at 36 and 38. Both my mom and aunt were perfectly healthy, and my grandma lived til her 90s and saw her daughters and all her grandkids grow up.

My aunt had her daughter at 39. I have another aunt who had two boys at the ages of 35 and 38. All my cousins were healthy and no birth defects.

There's a teacher at my school who had a healthy daughter at the age of 42.

I think doctors just have to give an age. I don't see a big difference between having a baby at 34 than at 35.

My 3rd child was born when I was 41 and I am due next month with our 4th girl, three months shy of my 44th birthday! You can do it! I just get lots of rest (or try to), eat healthy, and drink lots of water...lots of prayers help too!

I was 34 when my second baby was born. Mr. Wonderful didn't enter my life until I was 29, so...

One difference between my first and second baby was the way my doctor treated me. Not in a bad way, but I did have to go through a lot more as far as testing, but I also had complications that weren't necessarily related to my age or anything else they could figure out.

Even though I wasn't 35, my doctor treated me as if I already was. Something doesn't magically happen on your 35th birthday that makes you radically different when you're 34 1/2. 35 is a benchmark to start taking additional precautions, I think.

Thank you all for your replies. You have made me feel so much better. I lay awake at night worrying about this. It's nice to hear stories from others. You all have helped a lot!

I had my perfectly healthy daughter when I was 44 (our only) and each of my sisters had a child at 39. One of those same sisters had a second baby at 40, too. Back in 1970, our mom had youngest sis at 39. Everyone is great!

I firmly believe that we have the children we were meant to have...so no worries!!

Had my daughter just before I turned 35 and my son at 40. Doctors make a big deal about 35.

I had my 2 DDs at 36 and 38 - I had amnios for both and they were fine (and we got to find out the gender)! You've got loads of time! Good luck!
