I can't do it again...(long AND tmi)

Many of you are aware I lost my mom to cancer in May. I've been after my brother since Christmas to go get checked out by a doc. He admitted to me on Christmas Eve that he had an odd lump on his side. My brother has always been scared (he would never let prople know this!) of doctors, particularly needles. In fact, even when he was older and married, mom still would go with him (he had kidney stone issues in the past) to the doctor. She was the only one to calm him down and explain the medical terms to him in layman terms.
He finally went in this week I happened to find out today, so I called to see how everything went.
The doctor found a mass on his prostate and has scheduled a colonoscopy. His doctor told him the lump on his side is the least of his worries, that they need to deal with the mass.
If you've dealt with cancer in your life, you know that mass is a term you don't want to hear. He didn't want to talk about it and I don't want to push him. My sister went to talk to him tonight and she told him about the prep process for the procedure and he asked why she had one. She had one over a decade ago because of rectal bleeding. He told her very quietly that he has been experiencing that for four months!
He is only 48. I can't do this again. I feel physically ill tonight. My heart hurts for him because I know he is missing mom so much right now. I can't talk to DH because he is out of town and I don't want to tell him until he comes back. I don't want him to worry either. I know there is nothing to do but wait, but I never wanted to have this feeling again...

CANCER SUCKS!!!!!!!
I am so sorry you have to worry about a family member again. I lost my dad and many close friends to cancer and each time I need to deal with this ugly beast it opens old wounds. I will keep you and your brother in my prayers. Breathe and take it one day at a time. (((hug)))

Keeping him in my thoughts. I hope all goes well and it turns out to be nothing to worry about after all. In the meantime, keeping you in my thoughts as well.

My DH just went through testing for an abnormality on his prostate, and it was scarey. The good thing about prostate cancer is that it is very slow growing, and you can live normally with it for many years. So even if he's had it awhile, it's one of the most easily curable cancers. My fil had it, and was treated with radiation seeds with no ill side affects. I've heard of several others who've had this, and all were treated successfully. I will be keeping your brother, and you, in my prayers. My condolences to you all on the loss of your mother. (((playpower)))

I know it is scary, but stay positive unless you have news that tells you otherwise.

My Mom died 10 years ago, and a few months after that, my Dad was diagnosed with a melanoma. I told my husband, "My dad is trying to make me an orphan." (and his brother had died from melanoma years before) He had it removed, and it required no more treatment, and he is doing fine 10 years later.

I know it is terrifying, but be there for your brother, and accept these (((hugs))) from me.

I am so sorry you are facing this possibility again! First, know that a mass is NOT necessarily cancer. Prior to my breast cancer I had 4 biopsies of what were termed masses, all benign! Second, if it is colon cancer, or prostate cancer, both of those are very treatable - not something anyone wants to face, but most of the time those types of cancers can be cured! I am praying for all of you as we speak and we are here for you!

Suzy-my mom had melanoma as well. The last spot they found it was on her side. This is where my brother has a lump right now! Of course it could be completely un-related.
Munchkins-Thanks for sharing your positive experiences with me!

Thanks everyone. Your kind words mean more than I can express.

My father had prostate cancer 16 years ago, and then colon cancer 5 years ago. He is strong and active today, into his 70's. It was very scarey and emotional, but it is survivable if that is what it is.

((((((HUGS))))) to you and your family.

You have received some great advice! I know it is impossible not to worry, but do try to remember that our minds try to scare us with dire possibilities. My FIL had prostate cancer, had the prostate removed, and was fine for years. It reoccurred in the cavity where the prostate had been and he received radiation to the area and has been A-OK for years now, maybe 10 or so?? This is a very treatable cancer! He's still quite the ladies' man too, but that's another story! I'll be thinking of you and praying that your brother gets favorable results!

Thinking of your brother and hoping the mass is benign or easily treatable. ((Hugs)) to you.
