I just found out that I am going to be teaching Social Studies. I have never taught it in 4th grade. Any and all advice, ideas, suggestions, resources would be greatly appreciated.

What do you have to each?

I know that my district covers map skills and basic geo, then move on to early Ohio and weaves Ohio history into what is going on in the United States. Then we move to cover the early nation and so on. Start with what your district guide says and then you can know what questions to ask and or google.

make it as interactive as possible. Students enjoy it when you come off as a storyteller instead of just reading the book. Sometimes your state will have a website for students that will be beneficial.

Projects might include state symbols, counties, regions. etc. I do a Heritage Project that keeps my students busy from January through March. Check out Scholastic's website for info.

As previous poster noted--geography and map skills are important. Common Core requires investigative writing.

Good luck. Just remember, you don't have to be perfect the first year. It is a work in progress. Choose a foundation to build upon.

Remember the new standards /common core/revised social studies should be implemented this year. So if you haven't already, get a hold of those.

We use Ohio Studies Weekly and love it! We also use interactive notebooks and lots of hands on learning.

Next year is the proposed first year online assessment too

If, by chance, your district has money, check out this interactive website. You do need to pay for use.
