Go Math! is a new curriculum for me. We had our 3rd grade team meeting on Thursday and the teachers were saying to start with Ch. 3, Multiplication instead of ch. 1, numbers and operations. They say that ch. 1 is confusing, especially the part about comparative numbers and that we want to start with the reason for multiplication as we push fact fluency from the beginning. If you have experience with Go Math what do you think?

Technically, Go Math is my district’s math curriculum. Though, we don’t really use it... just as a guide and for introduction lessons. I can share our pacing guide with you if you’d like?

Do you mean compatible numbers? We teaching rounding but compatible numbers is not part of our standards so we do not teach them.

Personally, I think rounding is developmentally inappropriate for the beginning of the year. We have to teach it first as we have to follow the district’s scope and sequence but if we didn’t have to, I wouldn’t.

Go Math! will be new for us this year, too. There is a FB group specifically for third grade Go Math! and most of the teachers there seem to prefer skipping chapter 1 and starting with chapter 3. I think that I'll have to start with chapter 1 because of our district's scope and sequence, though.
