What do your students say that just get on your last nerve?

"I'm done."
"What'd I do?" - When you tell them to stop something! That just bugs me!

I second "Is this for a grade?" and "What'd I do?"

I'll add:
"Do I need to put my name on this?"

"What were the directions again?"

2. "You didn't give me ..." (instead of "I lost it" or "I was absent so I need..." )

1. "My mother took it out of my booksack" (when child doesn't have something he was supposed to). My response is always "Your mother isn't in this class. You are supposed to be responsible for your work/supplies."

MY least fave question:

"What do I do now?"

(2 seconds later)

"What do I do now?"

(5 seconds later)

"Now what?"

The next least faves (all within 5 minutes of the morning bell that rings at 8:30), "What's for lunch?" "Is it Friday Free choice time?" (on Tuesday), and "How long til I go home?"

Or, when turning in work -

"Where does this go?" -- Ummmmm, in the SAME bucket you've been turing work into now for 2.5 weeks. The spot hasn't changed.

I have a student that says that as soon as he gets a paper, coloring sheet, something to TRACE, anything. So I tell him we don't say "we can't" we say "I'll try" so now he says "I can't try" AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (pulling my hair out while I'm screaming)

I love that they ask when snack is when we just returned from lunch 5 minutes ago! Or they ask for water right when we get back from lunch. Man, I think my list can go on and on tonight!

"I don't get it!" to which I reply, "It seems to me you HAVE it, possibly you don't UNDERSTAND it."

"Where do I put this?" to which I reply.... "What subject is it? Maybe you should put it in the bin labeled that subject." My third year teaching I got "busted" on this topic on my evaluation. My principal told me that since ONE child asked me where to turn something in and what to do next, I hadn't taught my procedures. Now, this was in MARCH and everyone else knew... but this child asked EVERYDAY!!! It made me so mad, because she didn't even let me explain the situation. Oh well.... water under the bridge.

"Do I need to put my name on this?" to which I reply... "How will I know it's yours if you don't put your name on it?"

"Is this a grade?" to which I reply... "Everything you do in this classroom is for a grade. EVERYTHING!!!"

Biggest pet peeve: "I don't get it." Especially right after I have just gone over something. I always tell them that if they don't understand something to please be more specific. "I don't understand why the decimal is placed there."

I also REALLY hate "My bad." Hate it. Absolutely hate it!

"My mom forgot to put it back in my backpack." (Is it your mom's job?)
or
"My mom threw it away." (Umm.. your mom threw away a hardback book?)
Right now I am getting a lot of...
"Can I finish this tomorrow?" after about 2 minutes into work time (Uh... no!).
or
"Do I have to do this?" (uh...yes!)

Mine are "Now what do I do?" "Where does this go?"

I respond to almost every question with "What do you think?" Half the time I don't even register what it is the student is asking by the time I get "What do you think?" out. And way more than half the time, the student knows exactly what the answer is.

What do I do now?
Do we have to write our last name?
What time is it?
What are we going to do this afternoon/after recess/next, etc?
Does this go in the classwork basket?
What do we do on this? (two seconds after giving directions)
My mom forgot to put it in my folder/bookbag.

My first grade kids have this horrible habit of saying "teacher", instead of calling me by name, to which I reply, "yes, student?" It started with one little girl on the first day who couldn't remember my name and now it has grown on many of them. I have stopped answering. I don't know why it bothers me so, but it does. ha!

Oh thank goodness no-one has ever said, "I don't get it" to me!!

Interesting responses... most I haven't experienced which is good!

Mine are:

"he/she is teasing me..." in a whiny voice...
and
"can I go to the toilet?" no please and in instruction time.

... and of course the almost daily playground problems and disputes they save up for me to complain and fight about once they get back to class. Did you tell the teacher on duty? No... of course not, it only happened when the bell went GRRRRRRRRR.

wow, I recognize a lot of mine on here! Here are my top two (already been said, but they are my TOP TOP two):

"Oh, what are we supposed to do?" (after directions are given) (or some equivalent--- what do we do now? do we have to XXX? What did you say about XXX?)

What are we doing now? (or during math, or after recess, or etc etc)

I tell them I would never *not* tell them what to do! So many of their questions would be answered if they'd a) just listen the first time or b) just wait until I'm finished giving directions!

Logger-- I used to work at a school where it was super common to say "teacher" and I would answer "student" and it wiped it out pretty quickly. I'd remind them "my name is Ms. XXX" This was a K class though.

By far my most annoying phrase is "I aint got no..." I think I've broken that this year.
Another phrase that I think is just rude is "Do I have to?" I was shocked the first time I heard that.
I also cannot stand "I can't... I have ball practice"

I had to laugh - admittedly that would make me nuts too! HOWEVER, as a huge Colts fan, I've occasionally been guilty of saying "Get er Dungy!"

My pet peeve is the, Mrs. B, it's ____ o'clock. I've finally gotten to the point where I say, "Yes, so and so, I can tell time." Those clockwatchers drive me wacky!

I don't know why this bugs me, but it just does when anybody says it to me.

Also, when asked where their work is someone will say, " I turned it in." Then after they look again they find it in their desk. They always find it somewhere but they don't want to look for it.

After you call on someone who really looks like they want to answer they say, "I forgot," even to something simple.

And of course I agree with a bunch of other people that, "I don't get it!" really gets on my nerves when it is obvious they didn't even try.

Our school had each teacher post a sign that said

Instead of "I Don't Know" or "I Don't Get It" say this

May I ask a friend?
Could I have some more information on that?
Where could I find that information?

There was another one but I am drawing a blank. It has really help with not hearing "I don't get it."

Also, I am not nearly as nice as the person who posted responses. (I teach 5th) If they ask me where to turn it in. I tell them the trashcan. It takes a few moments, then they realize they should know.

Yes, asking when lunch is at 9:30 AM is on the top of my list too. I usually respond by saying "Didn't you eat breakfast this morning?"

"I don't get it" is another one. I make them read the directions to me and then I ask "Do you get it?" Usually they say "OH!"

"Did you do anything while I was absent?"

No, we sat here and waited for you to come back.

"I have to use the bathroom."

Thanks for letting me know.

"I don't want to . . . "

I don't want to do a lot of things that I have to do anyway.

"Where do you want me to stick this?"

The absolute top of my list is...

When do we go to lunch?

I don't know why but that drives me crazy. My response is when it's time. Then I tell them if they were busy working then they wouldn't have time to worry about eating lunch. I've even gone so far as to say I think there's not enough work if they have time to worry about lunch. This will slow them down on asking somewhat... but there's always that one kiddo that's just waiting on lunch. Maybe he/she really is hungry...

Another one that bugged me when I taught in an inner city school, was whenever someone would pass gas and the students would say that person "lost his/her manners". That just drove me bonkers.

I hate the phrase "My bad"

A close second is "Can I go to the bathroom, I really need to _____________" (fill in graphic description of their bathroom plans)

"When is this class over" the same as every other day... is another winner for me

I definitely agree with the previous posts regarding "I don't get it."

But here's the one that really bugs me. Our class participates in ordering books through Scholastic. I'm not exaggerating when I say that about an hour after a student turns in their book order to me they ask "Is the book order in?" I hear it multiple times a day everyday until the books finally arrive. While I'm glad they're looking forward to receiving books, the question gets old after awhile!

I also dislike "is the book order in?" ESPECIALLY when I haven't put the order in yet. If they see new Scholastic catalogs, that must mean the order is in! Although I am happy they like books...

I think I read everyone's and this one is missing: "If we don't finish, is it homework?" Or even just "will it be homework?" To which I try and reply "if you keep asking" or "if you want it to be" but sometimes I get so fed up with the question I just say YES! :-)

Clip to ScrapBook #50

it when kids ask, "Is this all we get?", when they have been given treats, birthday treats, rewards, or whatever. They should be happy with getting whatever they are getting. I have been known to take away something that they are complaining about.
I also agree with all the other phrases everyone gave. I always hate it when kids say, "What did I do?" I teach 6th grade and get that comment a lot. Also, the infamous, " I don't get it". Some kids say that automatically whenever an assignment is given. They just don't want to listen or even try.
Almost forgot, "What the ____" instead of saying the word. Hate that! Of course I don't want to say it.

What a fun post!

The one that drives me insane is, "Does this have to be in cursive?"

Yes, you've been doing cursive since kindergarten. I expect EVERYTHING to be in cursive.

"I don't get it" makes me crazy too.

top pet peeve: I don't get it.

also high on my list:
*When are the book orders coming? (the day after they gave me their forms)
*Is this homework?
*Do I have to do both sides of the paper?
*Mrs. XXX, it's time for lunch....(looking at the clock)
*What are we going to do in _______? as they crowd around my desk...Well, I'd really enjoy telling each and every one of you individually what we will be doing but maybe a better way would be for you to sit down and wait for your classmates so I can tell you all together.\
*Do we get a star for today? (asked in the morning after first period)
*What the?
*Can we have free time?
*How many sentences do I have to write?
*I'm done! or That was easy! -meanwhile the assignment is full of mistakes!
*Do we have to do this?-whining...

I must say that PT has helped a lot with some of these because I just say, "Do you think you are keeping the "dear teacher happy" when you say that?" as I walk toward the scoreboard....they usually get it.
I like the response to "where does this go?" -in the trashcan...I'm going to use that next week! Can't wait to see the look on their faces!

Many of my "pet peeve" statements have already been posted, but another one of my favorite is "Are we having outdoor recess?", when it is thunder storming outside! I respond with...."look out the window and tell me what YOU think the answer is to that question!"

"teacher" (I can even hear the intonation and tone the couple of students who do that use....argh!!!)

I tried not responding but it just seems to increase the number of times they say it! I also used positive reinforcement for those using my name. I'm going to use your reply, "yes, student"

I have to agree it infuriates me to hear "Do I have to?". I would love to say "Um yes, because I said so, and I am supreme ruler of this class" just once.

I also hate "the buses are here". This is followed by every 1st grader in my class running to the window to look, as if they have never seen one of those big yellow things with wheels and are completely flabbergasted by them!!!
I've explained over and over that the buses insist on being 30mins early in the lot at the end of the day, that I don't care if the buses are here or not, and that school is not over until the bell rings!!!

I also get irritated by "when is recess?" on half days when they leave at 12. I say you're getting a 3 hour recess today called a half day of school.

Do we have phy ed today? (Did you check the morning board where the daily schedule is posted?)
Is it time for lunch?
Is the book order here? (Always the day I mailed it.)
I'm done.
Can I go to the bathroom? (I respond, "I don't know, can you?" At first they are shocked, but finally learn to use "may I") And this year I have one to (to quote a PP), uses bathroom as a VERB.
I don't have ____. (Fill in blank with any of the materials that were on the school supply list provided to your family at least twice.)
And to demonstrate my ignorance, what does "my bad" mean?

My bad is like saying my mistake. I find it to be rude and obnoxious. When kids say it they aren't apologizing for their action, they're apologizing for being caught.

That "should we print or use cursive" thing continues even into high school! I teach business courses! It doesn't matter to me as long as I can read it!

The one that really bugs me more than anything is when they come up and say "I can go to the bathroom?" The inflection makes it clear it's a question but I always say "Great! It's usually a requirement in my class that you be potty trained." Some get very confused but they learn if they want to be excused, they need to say "May I go to the restroom?"

May you sharpen my pencil?
Okay, I hate sharpening pencils in the first place. This question just drives me up a wall. I can't count how many times I've told them that "May you" is wrong.

I gotta use it.
1. That isn't a question. 2. Thanks for the information.

I have one student who actually does say "May I go to the bathroom?" but then immediately adds "I can't hold it." Always in the middle of instruction, usually within 1/2 hour of a restroom break. We take two every day!

Can we have some candy?
No. I don't give candy to students who ask for it except on Halloween when they are in costume.

3. What do I write here?
4. I have to go to the restroom (they know they are not allowed...school policy not mine).
5. Ms. C you so green. (I am not Kermit)
6. What's this word?/ What's this word mean? (We are covering CONTEXT CLUES)
7. Do you have any lotion...I'm ashy.
8. It wasn't me.
9. Do you want this? (i take up EVERYTHING at the end of class unless it is a test)
10. What do I do now? (ITS READING CLASS IF YOU ARE DONE BEFORE EVERYONE ELSE...HERE'S A THOUGHT.....READ)
11. What's my average? (The day before progress reports report cards...YOU WILL FIND OUT TOMORROW AND NOTHING YOU DO NOW IS GOING TO CHANGE IT!)

In the 3rd grade class I'm in right now, they get homework packets weekly, but a math worksheet just about every night. After spending quite awhile explaining that the math sheet they were getting is due on MONDAY, a little boy raises his hand and says, "I think I'll bring mine in on Tuesday."
Um...don't think I asked when you WANTED to bring it in...

is one of my favorites....when the schedules clearly posted and I have mentioned it 100 times since school started.

Also, "I didn't hear you say that."

What about, "Are you talking to me?"
