Happy New Year Everyone: I was just wondering if anyone had a good idea, project , website for Black History month. This is my first year in 8th grade social studies. I do incorporate a unit on the Civil Rights movement in our book. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I downloaded a few freebies from TpT. I will try to mix them together. I also bought Laura Candlers Mini Literacy pack. It has ideas for doing reports using character traits for historical figures or Black Americans. I don't think its available any longer but she might be able to pull it out for you and simply sell that part.
I'll be watching to see what others suggest. I need projects too.

Just on pinterest and found something from Laura Candler and free.

Hello there!

I just responded to someone else (in the 6th grade forum believe).

I am going to suggest Madame Walker who was the 1st self made American female millionaire. Not African American but 1st American female millionaire. I am so surprised I hadn't heard her name until about 2 yrs ago!!

I stress learning about different African Americans who made contributions to society instead of covering the same 3 over and over. There is Jesse Owens, the Tuskegee Airmen and so many more.

There is a documentary called More Than a Month that speaks about Black History month and the need to cover the topic for more than 28 days. Maybe students could watch and discuss that?

Best wishes and let me know if you need more ideas.

I think this is one of the best sites ever, for any theme...Has all the primary resources for your students to study in the Underground Railroad unit.

This may be too late but if you are looking for a video to go with your unit you might try The Eyes On The Prize.
