I agree about the classroom economy. I completely dropped everything else this year and the money thing is working fantastically!

Classroom Economy

I too use a classroom economy. However, I'd like to change it up a little since I'll be teaching 5th. (I've taught 3rd and 4th) Would you mind sharing how you use your money: to earn, what are the rewards to spend it on, etc... TIA

I switched to Rick Morris' clip chart mid year. Love the change in positive behavior. I still need to learn how to use it better each day. My consistency was...well....inconsistent.

But the students liked it and I saw improvement overall.

I'm also using the class dojo. The kids love it and respond really well, and it's totally free! I do two week cycles and hand out certificates to the students with the most points after two weeks.

I use a classroom economy and LOVE IT! It works SOOOO WELL!!!!!!

However, I really think the following are MAJOR keys/secrets to classroom management (although no method is foolproof/perfect!)

1. Strong, positive relationships with the students
2. A strong, engaging, highly-effective lesson plan
3. Being positive and calm-you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar!

Clip chart

Clip to ScrapBook #12

I use the clip chart in my room. I found that I had a hard time remembering to move kids up though so I took out a step between green and the top so that it was easier to make it to the top and get a note and a jewel. The kids love it. I had one little boy who kept me on track. Occasionally he would see someone do something and quietly come tell me and ask if they could move their clip up.

I have to confess-I have trouble remembering what a kid did especially if it something little, so clip charts are hard for me. I found someone's idea on Pinterest where you color code your rules and if a kid gets in trouble he/she puts the corresponding color of popsicle stick in their pocket on a bulletin board. I've also seen a teacher who used clothes pins and the kids had to put their clip on a cut out with the rule on it. You could certainly tie a classroom econ. in with this for your positive side.

Mini-Economy/Class Dojo
Old 06-05-2013, 12:16 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #14

I do a combo. of the mini. economy and the class dojo. Students have a classroom job and they get paid every two weeks for doing that. On pay day, they also get paid for the positive points on the dojo. If they have negative behavior, I give them a fine and a negative point on the dojo. Fines can be $3 or $5. This is paid to me on pay day. We have a classroom store each quarter and the last quarter is a bake sale auction. I had one student pay $440 for a plate of cupcakes this year! I love being able to reward positive behavior with both the mini economy and the dojo. And I love that this positive behavior is passed onto the parents via an automated e-mail from the dojo. It's not just the negative stuff they are seeing.

I use Randy Sprick's CHAMPs management system, which focuses on teaching routines and expectations. I teach secondary. Class Dojo, classroom economies, and clip charts are a teacher management nightmare with over 100 kids in and out of the classroom in 30-90 minute increments.

We have 2 5th grade classes, so I see all 5th graders. Students are given $10 from each teacher ($20 each week). Students are charged $1 or $2 for such things as coming to class without a pencil (unprepared ), if they ask to go to the restroom other than designated restroom times, ask to go back to their locker, calling out during class, talking back, really anything that bothers you! $5 for no homework (each subject). They earn $5 for A on test, $4for a B, $3 for a C they pay $4 for a D, and $5 for an F. We do locker checks, binder checks, book cover checks for $2 each whenever we feel like it but the kids never know when. I have given $1 for the first person to answer my question correctly, or if I see someone being nice to someone else. You can use it any way you want to.

THEIR GOAL: every 4 1/2 weeks we have an afternoon of fun activities. (Movie, healthy snacks, games, outside. Each activity has a price value. We vary the price amounts so that everyone hopefully can do one activity. Those with more money get to do more more things and buy more snacks....that's life.

I keep pencils, erasers, and things of that sort handy for them to buy for &2 OR rent for $2 but they get $1 back when it is returned to me.

My students eat this up...they love saving for the fun day and some even cry when they lose money. (5th graders)

I did classdojo. The kids loved it and constantly begged me to please bring it up! That is because after they got 10 pts they did a treasure box hunt and got to change their avatars. Believe it or not that was what they really loved-getting new avatars. They would be looking to see what they wanted next time. They encouraged their friends to have the same.
An unexpected side was they soon learned negative numbers!! I found though I couldn't do it everyday so I sat aside 2 days a week that were less hectic. I wrote everyones name on a small corner of the board I kept a running total of pts earned (blue marker) and lost (green marker) then would award them first thing on tuesday and thursday.
I hope this helps anyone else that struggled like I did at first with classdojo.
