2013-14 Classroom Themes: Post Yours Here

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I thought it would be fun to start a thread where we all list our themes for next year. Then, if you want to bounce ideas off of someone, you can scan through to see who is doing something similar to you.

I'm not 100% sure about how to pull this off, but for now I think that my classroom will have a Disney cruise theme. The hallways will be decorated with an ocean theme. After doing this for a couple of months, I hope to merge it into a color theme of black, red, & yellow with slight Disney touches.

Crawfish....

using the turquoise set from creative teaching, adding red/white polka dots & solid white but throwing in crawfish as the little something extra. I love school girl style so much that I want a cohesive classroom so that is what I am doing, my own spin on things. Don't really have any titles for anything....haven't started on that yet but it's only the 3rd of June....give me time!

Can't wait to hear what everyone else will do!

I want to do a patriotic theme basing it on "From sea to shining sea". I am also going to try to come up with a Route 66 study/activity.

School wide theme is Safari. That's about all I know for now. I'm waiting for this year to end before even thinking about how to deocrate my room. Can't wait!!! Only 3 more "kid" days and one staff day to clean up and check out. It's been a dreadful year, and I will be glad to say good-bye to 2012-2013 school year. Here's hoping next year will be better.

I thought I was moving into a classroom with a big brown wall and picked this. I've already started working on it, so I'm keeping it...even though I'm staying in my same classroom.

Our school is doing "Rock On". I didn't know whether to do a construction theme or a rock-n-roll theme. I have more girls than boys so I went with the latter. There are a lot of good posts about this theme on here.

Price is Right
Old 06-04-2013, 09:28 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #9

I have decided to go with the game show, "Price Is Right," as my theme.

Sorry so long, but wanted to share my idea for others to use if they would like or to offer suggestions if they have any.

Since I started my thread asking for help, I have come up with a few more bulletin boards that I can do. I am still needing two more, but hopefully throughout the summer I can come up with them, or maybe someone on here has ideas.

My ideas:
The door will have a "Price Is Right" background and say "Come on down for a winning year in ELP."
My birthday board will be the Plinko game with the months of the year where the dollar amounts go. I will have a movable Plinko chip that will move along the board to highlight which month we are in. Student names and birthdates will be on Plinko chips and will be scattered around the board.
Behavior board will be the Cliffhanger game with directions to not let the climber fall off the cliff before the days count down to zero. If he is still climbing the class will receive a reward.
Reading Motivator board will be the "Showcase Showdown." Since I have grades 1-5 I will have five, rather than 2, contestants in the showdown. Each grade (contestant) will be given a specific showdown to "bid" on. The students will increase their bids by the pages they read. The 5th graders will earn a dollar for pages read, while I haven't decided on the exact conversion but since the 1st graders do not read at the level of the older students, they will receive something like 3 dollars per page read. Closest to their actual price will receive a treat at the end of the year.
Spelling board will either be the "3 Strikes" game or the "Big Wheel" they spin to see who goes to the showcase. Not sure yet.

Still need two more boards.

The school wide theme is fairy tales. It is very difficult to find anything premade to go with this. So my grade level is taking our own twist. We are doing an enchanted forest with owls and trees. I am using turquoise paisley banners and pennants on my boards.

I'm going to be a first year teacher in sixth grade next fall. I'm thinking black and white with a pop of color (haven't picked one yet). I do know that my lifesize skeleton "Earl" is going to be a center piece.

No Bones About It! Sixth grade is going to be fun this year!

I like this idea of posting your classroom themes. One is more creative than another. I was wondering--- do you think 6th graders are too old for Dr. Seuss? I teach reading/social studies. I was thinking on the lines of Oh! the places we will go!! Any feedback would be appreciated.

This is such a good idea to share themes. Everyone has such wonderful ideas!

I teach kinders and am doing a circus theme for the new school year. I want to have coordinating patterns throughout my room -- red and white stripes and a multi-color polka dot. I would like to do some kind of handprint circus animal name tags (maybe for cubbies) -- kinders and parents love handprints We also have a wall of windows in our classroom that faces the playground (great design for a classroom, right) Needless to say the blinds are always closed to minimize distractions so I would like to turn that wall into a bulletin board. Since I can't tape or staple on the blinds, I was thinking of stringing a clothesline with a silhouette of a tightrope walker and then clipping either student work or anchor charts to the clothesline.

I am doing a Wizard of Oz theme.

I have done camping, monkeys, jungle, board games, detective & Hollywood themes (and maybe others I'm not recalling), but I think this will be the most challenging. Still, I'm excited about it.

do you think 6th graders are too old for Dr. Seuss?
If your sixth grade is still in the elementary and all the teachers do themes, then I think you could make it work. The kids might think it's a bit juvenile, but they might enjoy it.
If your sixth grade is more of a middle school environment, I think it would be pushing it.

But then, I'm going to be a first year teacher starting in the fall, so I only know from subbing and my own kids (around that age now).

. . . yet! I use zebra print in my room. It lends itself to a safari, jungle, zoo theme. This year though I am going to use the zebra print with green polka dots and turquoise solids - mostly to tone down the other strong colors. I saw this in a classroom and it was very tranquil.

I did this two years ago and I titled it "Welcome to Mrs. Miller's Big Top 1st Grade"!! I took a red table cloth and gathered it up and made my room entrance above my door look like a big top! It was amazing, how thrilled the children were. I ordered several things in Circus theme from Oriental Trading to surprise them with when they came in the room:

Charlie Brown and Snoopy type not nuts.

I always do a beginning of the year theme and ending of the year theme. My ending from this year mostly stays up but covered all summer and is the beginning of the next year. I love going into my room in the fall and having boards all up and ready. I keep the rotation going so I have been doing a frog or dog beginning theme every other year for the past 6 or 7 years. I still love my dog theme but even as I covered my stuff this spring I knew I couldn't stand the little hoppers one more year.

Although I am keeping the same color scheme as last year, I am going to do my largest bulletin board with a United States map and a World Map. When we learn anything that has to do with an area in the United States or any part of the world, I am going to post a picture of the fact/book/etc. and have a string lead to that part of the country/state/continent/etc.

For math, I want to put "The World's Universal Language".

For morning meeting, I want my phonics song of the week to also go around this theme.

This is my second year with this theme...and I am moving to second grade (from first) So at least I know SOMETHING about next year! I already have the camping packet from tpt clutterfree mentioned above. And have added SOOOOO much stuff from home- carved bear art, twig table, metal picnic basket and lantern, fake rock from Home Depot, bedroll, twig pencils, campers care rules, pinecone garlands, and still thinking outside the box. Moving to another room (with more room and storage) I am hoping to 'spread our wings' as the eagle would say

I loved it so much this year, that I can't give it up. I am adding a few more things and changing my bulletin boards to blue background with red and white border.

But, I am already planning my next theme. It will be zebra print with pink and green accent colors. I already bought the border and will be hunting for cheap or on clearance items throughout the school year. (This is how I did my Dr. Seuss theme and I ended up saving a lot of money.)

Hi, I noticed that your hall is going to do an Enchanted Forest theme(love, love that). I saw a back to school b.b. that said "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Looked who's on _____ hall" Just a thought.

If you use The Sisters C.A.F.E. you could do something with that. Maybe Welcome to. Mrs/Mr.'s ________ Cafe. Also a reading area called "Starbooks"

I'm doing a bee theme this year. I have a bee-hive helpers set and am going to get another bulletin board set to make a reader board. I've seen some neat ideas, but does anyone have any good ones to share with a young teacher?

Thanks!

I'm going the simple route compared to all of you! Just doing polka dots everywhere, and only using black, pink, lime green and some yellow.

Make Your Mark

using Peter Reynold's books (The Dot, Ish and Sky Color) as inspiration. We are using dots to decorate, and I have several Peter Reynold's posters that were free downloads that I'm going to print and laminate. We already have dots with students' names (my students come from year to year for pullout) with their One Word goal for the year and their name. When we do our International Dot Day, all the students are going to create their individual dots to put on the walls of the classroom.

I think I'm going to have a banner made on VistaPrint that has Make Your Mark on it.

I've never done a theme in my 10yrs of teaching, so we'll see how this goes but I'm going to do an underwater theme this year. I'm trying to spend little to no money (which has been my issue with themes all along) so this will make it even more interesting! I already have one BB set that is diving related that I've had for years which will be for my main board, just have to get creative on the rest.

Our school (Catholic school) theme is "Make me an instrument of your peace" So I was thinking of doing instruments (although not sure cause I'm not a music teacher) or peace symbols. Another thought I had was since 3rd graders learn about communities, I thought i'd do something to incorporate that- but not sure how to yet. Any ideas?

Last year I did a garden them (First year of teaching - and a lot of time on my cricut!). I'm twisting the idea to be a wilderness theme this year - using some of the stuff I created last year. Wilderness seems to be a popular one this year! I love the idea of changing themes each year - and I am the only one in my building that does a themed room. There are so many, and lots of ideas posted from other teachers!

I already posted, but I have changed my mind. For years, I have wanted to do a shades of Czech theme, but couldn't think how I would pull this off since school supply stories don't have anything on that subject.

I was at Joann Fabrics today and found the perfect material to do a border for my bulletin board and I bought it. Now I'm committed. So that is my theme: Shades of Czech (Czech Republic).

Hollywood theme

Clip to ScrapBook #63

This year I'm planning to do a Hollywood theme in my room. I am going to focus on movies and have my students be the "stars". That being said, I'm thinking popcorn and movie reels and things like that will probably be used. We are going to make our own Walk of Fame and take movie star pictures for our student of the week. If anyone's done this theme (and I know that some of you have) any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance

I am doing blue, white, green and turquoise polka dots.

Those teachers doing owls, there was a classroom personalized floor cling from OT that said your name and went onto the floor or wall (I guess). Super cute. Scroll down a bit. I had one last year. Everyone commented on it. You put it on with water and a squeegee (sp?). It was super easy and reusable.

I am doing a Jungle theme for my firstclassroom! TPT has really helped me out and I now have Jungle Baby signs/letters/numbers printed and laminated. I also created jungle print milk-crate seats for my small group table. My bulletin board is We are WILD about 4k!

Quick Questions for Veteran Teachers: Do you change themes throughout the year or leave your theme the same the whole year? I feel like changing could get expensive!

Theme for next year
Old 07-02-2013, 08:56 AM

Clip to ScrapBook #73

Our school theme is Unity and I teach 2nd grade. The first graders that are moving up really have trouble getting along so my theme this year is Teamwork. I think I will use some sport stuff but really focus on the "We are one team" part. On Mondays I am going to try Monday Game Plan Time where we will have a team meeting and talk about any problems we had last week and how to solve them or praise successes. On Friday I have an award time that the students earn during the week that I used to call Fabulous Friday but I will switch to Game Time! I like themes to springboard my ideas for the year but I am not stuck to them. In the past I have done Western, Medieval, Explorers, Cats and Dogs. One of these years I want to do a Patriotic theme and a Space theme.

I did a circus theme last year and it was a blast!! I made an actual Big Top in the corner by the reading table. We had a circus day at the start of the year and the kids go to dress up as clowns to get their picture taken. We also make animal cracker carousels from Pintrest. I had so much fun with this one. And I LOVE your tightrope idea!

a Nautical theme. I have bright baby blue walls. I hope to incorporate navy and baby blue with red and white accents. I found the best material at Walmart to cover my bookshelves this year. I plan to make a life preserver out of a pool noodle. I was inspired by the redecorating of my own kids bathroom this summer. I also found lots of cool stuff at our local Big Lots. I have done bees, jungle, ocean, camping, Chicka Chicka, puzzles, and circus in the past.

I am moving from 3rd grade to 6th grade math. In third grade my classroom theme was Arthur (characters by Marc Brown). I had this theme for 11 years. This year I will be making a change an moving to 6th grade math. Therefore my new theme will be more of a color pallet. I am going for brown, aqua and lime green. Sounds weird I know, but really looks great together.

I am a first year teacher with a fourth grade classroom. I am doing construction to "build us up for to tomorrow". I have been facing some struggles finding materials, but have been scouring all kinds of sites to gather enough. I don't get a classroom budget so I am begging from what stores I can. I'm trying to be creative with what I can find round the house and garage also. Now if I could just get some of those orange cones donated...........

I have done bears for years, too...and don't plan to stop. I'm changing up the color scheme, but I've invested in this theme and it works for me. I really don't want to spend the money/take the time to change the theme each year. I lucked out many years ago when I started and had a mentor teacher who did bears and gave me some great ideas and then a teacher-friend who switched from bears to monkeys and gave me her entire bear collection of things. I've got enough to last me a lifetime!
