Do you make your fifth graders simplify fractions answers if they can? By that, do you mark it wrong or even take off points if they don't simplify? I don't, but I'm wondering what others do!

Our new series, Go Math, has students simplify fractions when we are working on division and remainders. My students did not learn this in fourth grade and we haven't done fractions this year so for now I won't be counting off for simplifying fractions but after I teach the concept I take points off if they don't simplify.

I teach 4th, but I thought simplifying fractions is a 5th grade skill. In 4th we teach equivalent fractions. Last year I taught my high math kids how to simplify because they were starting to do it on their own. So I figured I might as well teach them what its called.

I teach 5th math and I do make the students simplify and I take off points if they do not.
