An autistic 5th grade boy (or any boy, for that matter) should not be given a "Most Annoying Male" award.

As a mom (AND a mom of an autistic child), this doesnít make me sad...it makes me livid.

However, Iíd be just as livid if it was a NT child.

What was the teacher thinking!?

With you! I could not believe that someone would actually do this to a child.

Completely uncalled for. I wonder if the kids came up with the ideas? Still no excuse, but I prefer to think the teacher didn't pay enough attention than to think they actually came up with the idea.

That is disgusting! Imagine how the teacher must have treated this poor kid all year long. I can't believe there is a teacher out there that thought this was a good idea. Gives a black eye to all real educators. Heads would roll in a more affluent community!

Thanks for the heads up on this.

WTF??? Why would that be an award category for anyone?? That is unbelievable. I can't even fathom what that teacher was thinking, or how those parents are feeling. One of my kids' teachers did something similar one year -- not quite as bad, but very inappropriate and pointing out something negative other kids were thinking about him (and he had no clue-- until she did this-- that others might have not had positive feelings about him). I was PISSED. And there wasn't a plaque to commemorate it, thank goodness.

I was really disgusted by this. The pain was palpable.

On the other hand, I am most outraged about the practice of giving awards at all, the ceremonies and the act of giving anyone one. The value of it is lost. I remember, the show must go on, everyone is a special snowflake and needs a special little trophy.

During my first year of teaching, all of the new teachers had to read this book about how to always praise children. Even in some of the lines said clearly even if there is nothing to find something to praise or congratulate students about every day.

I hated that book, it ended up in my garbage pan. However, I did see a lot of teachers doing just this giving false praise.

I am old school, just give awards that are meaningful and to students that earned them.

I am not trying to absolve the teacher but why do we ONLY automatically blame the teacher? For something as important as award day, the awards should be checked by other teachers and approve for distribution by the administration. It only makes sense.

That makes me absolutely furious. It's teachers like that that give the rest of us a bad name.

Thats what I think every time some garbage like this happens. It will go into the collective consciousnesses of the general public and they will dredge it up every time we try yo ask for...basically anything. This is why teacher bashing happens. A few rotten apples and people think they can and should smash the whole bushel

And the award for meanest teacher goes to....

This is shameful. Disgusting. If this teacher thought it was a "joke" he/she is too dumb to be teaching. I hope they are in that classroom every day next year to make sure those students are being treated right.

When my daughter was

When my daughter was a junior, the senior drama students created different awards for their fellow dramatists. My daughter got the "Christian Ho" award. The seniors thought it was funny because she was the opposite. She was very hurt by it.

I wrote the drama head and told him that the award was hurtful to both my daughter and her family and suggested that in the future he should vet the awards before they were given. He apologized and assured me it would not happen in the future.

I saw no reason to take it further.

The news showed a pic of the award and the name of the school was misspelled on the award. So sad.

I don't need my awards checked by admin because I'm neither cruel nor stupid. I am shocked that nobody along the line, from teacher to trophy maker, took a second to reflect that the award might not be a good idea.
