Help with rhyming

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I've been teaching rhyming words for about three weeks. I did an assessment the other day and only half of my students can rhyme. What are some activities... songs, games, etc. that you do that you think will be helpful for my students.

Thanks =)

Rhyming artifacts to teach rhyme

I went around my house and collected rhyming pairs of articles. I pass out the items at circle time and kids find their match. For show and tell I send home a card that asks the student of the day to bring in a rhyming pair. The child shows one item and the class guesses the other item that is still hidden. Last October I got a real piece of toast and a ghost :-) We make a chart of the things they bring in. Your rhyming pair only goes up if it is not already on the chart which encourages them to search for something new. Pairs are easy to find; pan-man (action figure), clock-sock, boat-goat, bunny-money(a coin), pen - hen, nail-pail...

Rhyming Game

I know a game where the students will sit in a circle and you will need a ball. You can pick a word and say it out loud to the class. Then roll the ball to a student and they have to say a word that rhymes with the word you said. If they pick a rhyming word they will then roll the ball to another student who has to say a different rhyming word. This continues until someone says a word that doesn't rhyme with the initial word. Then you can pick a different word to rhyme and play again.

lovegrade1, what a great way to get families involved in rhyming practice!
I am going to log off and start finding rhyming artifacts to bring to school tomorrow. Thanks!
