The days of thematic units are gone for me unfortunately. I teach from scripted programs for L.A., math and science so I no longer have true thematic units as I had years ago when I had the freedom to be creative. I do integrate poetry, writing and some art to accompany writing pieces that correspond with the seasons, holidays, social studies and science topics. In the beginning of the year I try to incorporate some "All About Me and Getting to Know You" activities. I wonder how many other PTers are in the same boat?

Haven't done fun units like that since 2001. Around Christmas time, I like to bring out my gingerbread unit that I created long ago. Always fun to do the week before Christmas break.

While we do have to have LA and Math blocks at the same time within grade levels, I still find the time to put in some time each day for what you might call units/themes (usually 20-30 min). I use them as my Social Studies and Science but they will occasionally fit in my LA block too depending on what it is and the stories that might go with them. I think it's important that the children have this time to not only learn about "fun" things but to also do some hands on stuff; plus we are required to teach SS and SC so that's how I get away with units.

Here are some of the unit/themes that I do:

All About Me
Community/Family
Fall/Leaves/Trees
Spiders/Bats/Owls
Holidays
Winter
Around the World
Polar Animals
Habitats
Rocks
Dirt/Soils/Fossils
Earth (taking care of)
Spring/Plants/Seeds/Flowers
Worms/Insects
Forces (push/pull)
Matter (solid/liquid)
Summer/Water/Weather Cycle

I know there is more but those are the ones that I can think of right now.
