Shared Writing/Interactive Writing

Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi everyone,

I know that the balanced literacy model entails shared and interactive writing.

Well, I have 8 students (I know, I might seem lucky), however, my students are in 2nd and 3rd grade with disabilities ranging from a mild learning disability to moderative cognitive impairments. I have been using the Lucy Calkins writer's workshop model with them (which is very, very difficult for some of my kids) and am now interested in doing some interactive or shared writing.

My students are all basically at a late kindergarten to early 1st grade level in literacy. Any ideas of early elementary shared writing lessons?

Thanks so much!

Have you ever done this? It works on all grade levels and I love it. When I was working with 1st graders I would give them a RAFTS prompt from the picture book we read at snack/storytime.

It stands for:
R = role of the writer
A = audience they are writing to
F = format used
T = Topic
S = Strong verb

For example, I did a unit using Jan Brett and Hedgie the Hedgehog. The main writing piece was that each child wrote a letter to Jan Brett. The topic was how did she get her start and then an individual statement or question using a list of strong verbs I had on the board. You could tweek this to work for your kids. I love using this technique and have had success from 1st grade up to 9th graders.
