So I just hung up on one of the most generic scams I have heard.
"$299 will be transferred in 24 hours from your checking account or plastc card for the renewal of a subscription."
Yes, they really said plastc card. I guess that's to include both debit and credit.
I hung up before hearing what I was supposed to do to stop this transfer. I sure wish no one would fall for these schemes. The only way my phone will stop ringing is if the scammers make no money.
Usually I get one or two calls a day from "Linda Davis" because of my great credit rating. Of course it is a robot but, with a very cheery voice she puts me through to her supervisor. Last week before he could get too far into his scam I interrupted to tell him how impressive "Linda Davis" is and why he should give her a raise, what a great employee she is and great customer service skills she has...he hung up on me!
any phone call where the Caller ID & number are not ones I recognize immediately. If it's someone I know, they will leave a message because they know me & that I don't stay right beside my phone all the time.
I got the plastic card scam twice in one day last week. First time it was $299. Second time it was $599. Both times went to voicemail and were deleted.
We've also been getting those same calls several times a day for the past few weeks. Between those and the political calls (thank God those have stopped since Tuesday!), we've been going bonkers!! The scammers are really going at it in full-tilt mode.
My phone alerts me to possible scams, I don't know how it knows that. I still have to hang up on many. I am also getting a lot of scam text messages lately. Those I block, but many text again with a different number. Annoying!
All my scam calls are screened and I no longer even hear then ring. I have an account through Verizon and they identify possible scam calls so they are immediately sent to voice mail. None of the scam calls leave a message. I haven’t answered a scam call in over a year. It’s wonderful.
I don’t ever answer calls from unknown numbers.
My iPhone also has an option where I can silence calls from unknown numbers... It sends them straight to voicemail.
My phone catches the majority of scam calls, and I usually won’t answer a number I don’t know.
Now I’m staying at Mom’s house, and she gets dozens of calls a day. Today I turned off the ringer on her phone. Anyone calling for her at this point has my cell number anyway, so I’m not afraid of missing a call. If it’s important and they can’t use voicemail, that’s their issue.
I haven’t had that, but I recently got a call at about 5:00 a.m. In my groggy state, when the guy said, “Is this (my name)?” I said yes. Since then I’ve wondered what the ramifications will be. I don’t know what I can do to “fix” what happened.
Lilbitkm mentioned this. I just found about this the other day and I turned it on and it works.
iPhone:
To turn on Silence Unknown Callers, go to Settings > Phone, then scroll down, tap Silence Unknown Callers, and turn on the feature. Calls from unknown numbers are silenced and sent to your voicemail, and appear in your recent calls list.
Android:
Tap the phone icon on your Android, which is usually at the bottom of the home screen.
Tap the three dots at the top of the Phone app screen.
Tap "Settings" in the dropdown menu.
Tap "Block numbers" and then toggle the button beside "Block unknown callers" to green.
