Literacy Coaches

I'm currently a graduate student studying to be a literacy specialist and I am a Kindergarten teacher. I'm curious about literacy coaches and their roles within other schools. I don't have one in my school.
A literacy coach plays the same role as the teacher except they don't actually implement the ideas for reading and writing. The roles of the teacher and the roles of the literacy coach within a school are different but they are both working towards a common goal. The literacy coach is like an extra brain for the teacher if you will. In addition, I think the literacy coach should be more of a facilitator between teachers. Teachers should use their own personal resources to help other teachers or add to a coaches ideas on various approaches to help different students.
Are literacy coaches common in schools? If so, what are their roles within your school? If not, is there a teacher who fulfills this role? How does he or she contribute to classrooms in the school?
