Question about secretaries

If you have an unexpected absence on a Monday because of sickness or emergency, do your secretaries or office assistants willingly make copies for you to give to your sub?

I have heard of schools where they do this and others where the secretaries refuse.

Personally Iíd never ask since theyíre so busy. Iíve asked my team mates to do it and theyíve always done it for me. Iíve only needed it once and that was when I was in the hospital.

I also would never think to ask the secretary. I would ask a teammate first and my instructional assistant second.

Secretaries and copying

I used to email both my teaching partner and secretary. If teaching partner couldnít do it, secretary would.

I have to say, if she could, (and she did in pinch occasionally for a few minutes), our secretary would be the sub if necessary. She was truly amazing.

Our buildingís secretary is amazing. She would do it in a heartbeat. With that being said, I would never ask her. My teammates are wonderful about helping out in a pinch. They would even pull together a lesson if needed.

Our office staff would do it if asked. We would usually use our teammates first.

Our ladies in the office would do whatever was needed for us. They truly put the students first. Sometimes, too much so.

It would never occur to me to ask ours. They have way too much to do. We rely on our grade level mates.

Others on team

Others on the team will do it. If we are at home and have work and plans to send to the printer we just do that and a teammate will get it from there.

I have never asked. I do have several days worth of emergency plans left with copies made in case for some reason I couldn't get to school to put stuff out ( like I was hospitalized)

However, I live next to my school so I can get over there if I need to before anyone was there.

I would ask my teammates, not the secretary. I know ours would if I asked, because she's too nice and she overextends herself, but I would never think to ask.

I try not to give extra work to our secretaries when Iím out. I will email lesson plans since itís the only way I can get it to the sub.

I have emergency plans ready to go at a moments notice with everything copied. (One day of plans).
One day this school year, I used my plans for a meeting and the next day DD got sick. I had to bring her to school sick to quickly make copies (we live only a few minutes away) and the secretary saved me about twenty minutes by copying science and social studies handouts while I finalized my plans. She also arranged for me to have my preferred sub who supposedly was already booked.
I love our secretary!

I have never asked anyone in the office to do something like that. I typically made plans that didn't involve needing copies (but I rarely used copies of stuff while teaching-- for many reasons and one of them was that we rarely had stuff written in the language in which we taught). But if I did need copies, usually our subs were ok making a few copies during a break or another teammate might make some. But that was rare. Of course, I was almost never absent, either. In good part because it was SO MUCH WORK to miss a day

I wouldn't think to ask her, but she probably would if I emailed them. If that situation arose, I have about 2/3 days of emergency plans in a sub binder that is on my desk at all times. It has a schedule for specials, class list, entry and dismissal procedures, allergies, and a flow of the day for every day of the week. We don't usually do worksheets in kindergarten, but I do keep some in this binder.

no they don't. Other teachers will do that for their fellow teachers as well as make sure the sub plans are where the sub will find them and also make sure the room is set up for the students. Teachers will most often check with the sub to make sure everything is ready and answer questions before the students arrive.

OTOH-I volunteer in my former school district and copy every week. I copy for the 2 grade levels I taught with. The secretaries have come into the main copy room, they have their own copier in the main office, and they want to use the machine. They asked me to do their copying. Lesson learned..ask how many copies before saying yes. They handed me 3 pages and wanted over 500 copies of each. Oh, my!

*Yes, in other schools in my district the office staff will make copies if a teacher is absent or they will make copies for teachers if they unexpectedly need something. Our secretaries although personally friendly, just don't do anything extra.

If teachers get sick late at night, they usually ask me as a sub to do it in the morning, and I really hate it because itís hard to get a machine sometimes. There might also be 150 copies to make of different wkshts. If the office does at least the first class and I have a prep or break later I donít really mind that. If the office has them done Iím always grateful, but thatís rare.

I would never think of asking. Also, the secretaries and our admin have always made it abundantly clear that the office is very, very busy and that we should cater to them and their stressors.

They have never acknowledged the same for us teachers, though. I canít wait to transfer.

I'm grateful because my colleague didn't respond but asked if tomorrow we could meet after school. I have asked her for literally nothing this year and covered her classes when she was sick with one minute notice.
