We have an appointment (Update)

We went this afternoon and met with the trainers.

We had a detailed discussion about what we are looking for in a dog (age, size, temperament, training) and what they do. They got to know DS and DS met some dogs: an easy going little mixed breed dog, their huge well trained Rottweiler that thinks heís a puppy, the dog version of DS (), and a sweet little dog like amigaís granddog.

The trainer said she got a lot of really good information about DS from those interactions.

Long story short, DS is getting a service dog! We will get the dog as a puppy and work with the trainers as the puppy grows to get him properly trained as a service dog. Right now, weíre looking at a yellow lab which I think will be a good match for DS and his energy level.

DS is so excited. Heck, weíre all so excited.

Now to figure out a name.

That's so exciting! It sounds like the trainers really know what they're doing too. What kind of tasks are you hoping the dog will do? I've seen all sorts of amazing things service dogs can do!

What an amazing addition to the family that dog will be. Iím so excited for you guys.

Sounds like a fun and productive day! It'll be great for the dog to grow along with your ds.

What kinds of specific tasks will the dog be trained to do as a service dog?

Right now, weíre thinking the dog will provide emotional support for DS, deep pressure (he LOVES deep pressure), calming during meltdowns/overstimulation, basic companionship and responsibility/routine, tactile grounding, potentially accompany him to school one day when heís older, basically anything we can think of that he needs....his language explodes whenever heís around animals so that is a huge benefit in my book as well.

Dogs are absolutely amazing. They have such a pure love. I am partial to the Rottie because of my own boy Ranger . He is not a trained service dog, but I have a feeling if he went through the training he would be a natural. He seems to sense when my heart rate is getting way out of control. This causes me to pass out. He will come up and put his head in my lap or lean up against me. A few minutes later, I will start to feel it. He is a very big boy! He is already at 120 pounds and only 16 months old!
I also took him to school with me when he was a puppy. When my kiddos that have Autism would start to stem, I would get them to help me with him. It was AMAZING how they would react to him.
I am so excited for you all! Please post pictures when the new family member arrives and let us know how it is going. I have a feeling this will be wonderful for your son! The benefits are astounding.
