Substitute Educators Day: American Education Week

Substitute Educators Day is a result of NEA Representative Assembly's New Business Item (NBI) 2003-41. The purpose of this NBI is to increase appreciation of school substitute employees. These professional educators provide a critical link in the education of public schoolchildren by serving as a bridge to provide continued quality education to children in the temporary absence of regular classroom educators.

Substitute Educators Day seeks to:

Increase respect for substitute education employees
Advocate for all school substitutes to receive wage and health benefits for those who work most to all of a full school year
Receive genuine, continual professional development in the art of substitute teaching
Provide a reminder for school staff about effective practices to prepare for, welcome, and support substitute educators.

Wasn't even aware of such a date until I saw your post.
Apparently, it's celebrated the week prior to Thanksgiving week.
Aside from one attempt to recognize subs, we don't receive continued training to help us gain effective substitute teaching strategies/behavior management practices. Nada. Zero.
We learn as we go.
At some point in the past, our district did attempt to get away from the term "sub" and its connotation. We used to be referred as guest teachers and introduced to classes as such, with a brief reminder of how we welcome, treat and respect guests. That practice stopped. Oh well, they tried I guess.
To this date, our badge still introduces us a Guest Teacher though .

I have thought that it would be nice for schools to have "Substitute Teacher of the Year Award." At least ot might bring more awareness that we actually exist and may motivate subs to do a better job than the outstanding job they do, already. Couldn't hurt.

I'm not aware of any official training for subs beyond district stuff when hired.

Is there any such thing?

If you don’t have an education degree, in Illinois you must have training. You must be 18 with at least a high school diploma. I believe the training is 7 hours, and you must pass a test afterwards. Also must be able to pass a background test. Every summer, training is offered to all subs, but I don’t take part. I’m old, have over 30 years in education, and only sub in my old district for middle and high school.
