Hello PT friends! I would really love your prayers and positive thoughts! My brother just called to say that our 89-year-old mom fell in her house and could not get up and was taken to the hospital because the paramedics thought she may have broken her hip. Of course we can't go to the hospital with her, so we are waiting to hear from the doctor. I hope this isn't a silly question, but is it really possible for someone to break their hip falling on a carpeted floor? I'm hoping that nothing broke, and that she will be home soon.
I hope your mom is fine and she home soon after being checked.
To answer your question/As we get older sometimes our bones become very brittle and break easily. Also I have heard of bones breaking and then that is the cause of the fall.
Sending prayers for your mom that she did not break any bones. I do think you can break your bones in any fall carpet or not. I think its a matter of how you fall.
Also, 1956BD is correct. Not only can someone break a hip falling on carpet, an person who has brittle bones can have a hip break just standing which will cause them to fall.
When you get older your bones become brittle because of loss of calcium. I have even heard of ribs cracking from coughing. So the answer to your question is definitely yes. I am praying she did not break anything and if she did she heals quickly.
Sorry to say it is possible. My dad fell and fractured his hip when he stood up from the sofa. His foot had fallen asleep while watching tv and he wasn’t able to support his weight.
Prayers and thinking good thoughts that it isn’t broken.
Thank you for your prayers and responses! I got a call early this morning from my brother. The doctor called him and said she has a fractured femur. They will decide whether surgery is needed this morning.
I have prayed for you mom's recovery. I wonder if its less serious to break a femur than a hip? Both are extremely serious at 89, not trying to minimize that.
