Santa Maria CA, questions

Does anyone live there or near there? My husband sees many jobs at the hospital there that sit and arenít filled? Why? Is the crime bad? Do you have an idea why. Please share if you have ideas. He doesnít want to apply because he thinks something must be wrong.

What is good about the area? We have high school kids. Are schools bad or ok or good? Any swim teams there?

Thanks so much for any and all information.

I don't live in Santa Maria but I live close. My guess is probably the cost of living outweighs the salaries offered. Where I am you can barely afford to raise a family on a doctor's salary. There's no way you can raise a family as a teacher, police officer, nurse, etc.

I don't know much about the schools. I do know a few people that live there (with small children) and really like it. Sorry I'm not much help!

I used to live near Santa Maria and taught for one semester at one of the high schools. That was about 10 years ago, though. A lot of people who worked in my town lived in Santa Maria because the housing was so much less expensive.

The general perception was that there was a lot of gang activity in the area, but that was the perception of a population of people who lived in a fairly idyllic location. It wasn't bad at all by most urban standards.

It's considered a rural area, and if I recall correctly, that means that compensation from insurance companies is calculated differently. That was a problem in my town where housing was crazy expensive and doctors/nurses couldn't afford to live there because their compensation was not commensurate with COL. If I had to guess, that's what I would say the problem with hospital jobs in Santa Maria are as well.

However, everyone I knew who lived in Santa Maria and worked/went to church/had kids in private school in my town loved living there except for the commute.

I would not live there because it is too rural for me. Bu if you like a quieter community you may be happy there.

Your comfort level with Santa Maria would depend on what type of community you live in now.

I stop there to go to Moxie Cafe when we are traveling up or down the coast.

The homes seem more affordable and it feels safe to me.

I believe the high school serves a few towns so it should have a lot to offer.

I’ve always lived in California. Here’s what I know about Santa Maria:
*It’s rural.
*Some Pirates of the Caribbean movies were filmed there.
*DH’s college roommate at UCLA came from Santa Maria. His family were wealthy ranchers. He was an outstanding golfer, on the UCLA Golf Team. I liked him.

Bet I was a big help.

I live about two hours away from Santa Maria, as you are passing through, it looks nice. Have stopped in some stores there on my way further North. I always thought it would be nice live there. It seems to growth there, and my cousin as lived there for many years. She is retired and never had complaints about Santa Maria .

Do not know about the schools nor about swim teams. Like many areas, there are always good and bad parts of a city. Do research and go for a visit. The surrounding areas are beautiful.
