google classroom question from a sub

I am new to the online teaching experience.

I had only a few special ed classes this year. Then this week I was in an 8th grade science class for five days.

Of the roughly 65-70 students I had this week, only one student regularly had their camera on. The rest just displayed their avatars.

There is no way to know if the students are actually there, or even awake. They are mostly silent when I ask questions to check their understanding.

Is this normal? Do most students keep their cameras off, or are they only doing this since I am a sub?

We have the expectation that cameras will be on.

My district also has said we canít require cameras to be on.

I teach elementary and find it ridiculous..
Itís even worse in higher grades.

I have two kids in my class that I couldnít even tell you what they look like.
I make them turn them on at the end of every class and the end of the day to say good bye but some of them wonít even do that

Can you monitor chat and ask for answrs? Use the polling feature?

We haven't had much in the way of guidance about the cameras, but I can't stand it when cameras are all off. Makes me want to turn my own off. It makes me want to respond with just a video rather than an in-person lesson.

We don't have subs at this time, but if I had a sub I would expect cameras on for them, just like I expect for me.

Since I am not totally familiar with how to use google classroom, I do not see the students when I am presenting slides or a video., I only see what I am presenting. I can see the chat section when I am talking to students when not sharing.
I am sure there is a way to share things that still allow me to see chat comments, but I have not figured that out yet.

Sirsubalot- the only way to see google meets while presenting is to split your screen (and then present only a window or a tab) and keep the meet on the other side. Splitting your screen isn't too hard. You can download an extension, or just resize your window to half size and pull a tab out to the other side.

It gets small but small is better than blind.
