i have an interview scheduled on Wednesday and need to prepare a demo lesson to send them tomorrow and present on Wednesday. This is for a SPED position. I've never had to do a demo lesson before and I'm nervous to do so over Zoom. Any ideas on what to teach? It needs to be reading or math concept oriented and appropriate for learning support students. It can only be 20-25 minutes long. This is for a middle school/high school lesson.

I will also try to post this on the Special Education board.

You could choose a teaching point such as “Today I want to teach you that we get to know our characters by paying attention to their feelings. We can tell how they are feeling by what they do and what they say.”

Then model it with a book like Elephant and Piggy. Have the “audience” turn and talk about the next page or two. Then tell them that when they read, they can tell how the characters feel by what they say and do.

Check your video settings and make sure the mirroring option is unchecked so when you hold your book up to the camera, it won’t be backwards. I like Elephant and Piggy books because their feelings are so obvious.

If you wanted to do a follow up small group, you could teach them to make their voices match the emotions of the characters.

I would do this with first or maybe wnd graders. Good luck!

Thank you for your reply! It sounds like a great lesson. I forgot to add that this is for a middle school/high school position. I edited to clarify.

They seem to like gimmicky stuff. The kind you pull out for evaluations. And self contained, meaning you can finish the whole thing in x amount of time. Has all the steps, has an activity that you can pin a standard on, something to assess, and closure. Throw in some think pair share--administrators loooove that. Colors are good too...
