Feedback after rejection

Is it ever okay to ask a principal for feedback after an amazing interview, then not being chosen?

Background: I did a long term sub position for a school. The staff loved me and the kids responded well to me. I let the principal know, when the position was over and the staff member returned, that if there was ever an opening in this school, I would be happy to come back.

So in June, the staff member who held the job left, and I applied for the position. I was called right away for an interview and felt it was the best interview I'd ever given. It made me so sad when, 3 weeks later, I was told the principal went with another candidate.

A retired principal friend told me that it would be appropriate to email and ask the principal for feedback as to why I wasn't chosen, and how I could improve. My fear is that in order to keep their noses clean, I won't be given the truth [such as, you're too old, you're too experienced, my best friend's cousin's husband's sister needed this job, etc.] Has anyone ever done this and had positive results?

They could tell you what they were looking for, but they have to be careful what they say legally. Not sure it would be helpful.

Thank you. I was torn between asking and just letting it go, and I appreciate the advice and help! Time to move forward then.

As much as you'd like to know, I would not ask. I doubt if they would be truthful anyway. I am so sorry you were not selected for the position. It hurts a lot especially when you had helped them out tremendously as a long term sub. Odds are it was someone with a connection somewhere along the line.
