Would you say something if you feel like you got a really difficult class list compared to others?

I probably would at my current school because my partner and I are the only teachers on our grade level, so we teach all of the students. If I felt the classes were off-balance, I have the kind of relationship with admin where I could point that out. I would still be teaching all of them, though.

It really does depend on your relationship with administration and how willing they are to listen to your concerns. I have been in other situations where I would just let it go and play the hand I was dealt.

I would not say anything about my list compared to other class lists. What I would do is discuss concerns and needs for support, such as:

Johnny and Jimmy had difficulties last year in the same classroom, as you know. Did you intend to place them in the same class again this year, or was this an accident?

I have seven children who were rated by their last teachers as having issues with behavior. I'm concerned that they will feed off each other. Do you have any suggestions as to how to prevent this?

50% of my students were below average in their DRA/PALS/or other reading achievement tests last year. How soon can the Reading Specialist begin working with my class to help them get up to grade level standards?

I have six kids working on a pre-primer level. Can I get some extra Kindergarden readers from the book room so I can meet them on their level?

What you're doing is making sure that your principal know the hand you got dealt, and that she knows you are proactive in managing your hand. It comes off as professional rather than whiny.

PP had some great suggestions for hope to word things. I would also suggest you send it as an email so you have proof of concerns and how they were addressed

yes--i would first check with the 2 4th grade teachers and ask them if it looked right. (i'm not sure i would even know that my class looked difficult...)

i would also look at my teaching partner's list and talk with her.

then i would check with the principal.

i have been at my school a very long time--that may make a difference in if others would do the same thing...

I would say something. Figure out a plan for which students could be switched out and offer to take some from other teachers who are also high maintenance but not as bad as the ones on your list.

At my former school each grade level team met with the principal, special ed teacher, and ESOL teacher to look at class lists. If one teacher had too heavy a burden, a trade would be made so a difficult student ended up leaving that class.

We got our class lists a month or so ago. The grade below us wrote comments about each child. My class comments were VERY different from the other classes. I even had 2 different pairs of students who in the notes it stated to separate! I did mention this to my P. I have worked with my P for more than 15 years and she knows I don't bring up trivial concerns. She did make changes separating the students that needed to be.

We were never given class lists until we got back to school for professional days before the students came back.

Absolutely! Classes are supposed to be as equitable as possible. It is not good for the kids OR for the morale of the teachers when they are skewed. I have even seen it breakup strong teams due to resentments. The time to speak up is well before the lists are published, as it is much harder to change after that. Go in with hard data to prove your point to the principal.
