paying taxes

You know what I like about turbo tax? They are so darn happy! I love the "Good News!" comments and "Almost done!" encouragements. Of course, all I've done is verify that my address and phone number are the same as last year. But it's good news that I haven't moved and I'm almost done with filling out the basic information about who I am and where I live.

I can only do about five minutes worth every evening. I'd rather walk naked on I-285 than work on my taxes.

I know, I feel like I have my own personal cheerleader. I haven't even started mine yet...I'm so afraid.

Did you buy it or download the online version?

Don't even get me started on taxes.. We just did ours. Normally we either don't owe or we get a refund.

This year... We owe $5300

I think it was Turbo Tax that let me do a quick estimate of taxes this year. I didn't want to sit down yet and do it, but I was nervous after all the stories I was hearing. (Both family and friends owing thousands.) I answered a couple of quick questions (income, tax paid, simple deductions) and got an estimate. If they're right, I'll get a refund this year. It's about a third of what I got last year, but I'm relieved. I just didn't want to owe!

Anyway, it was really nice to do a quick check, before I sit down later to do the actual taxes. I just hope the estimate is accurate!

I guess I downloaded it originally. What's nice is that it's right there as a saved bookmark. So I just log in and it brings up what I need from last year. Of course, I had to hunt down my password...which I couldn't do so I had to create a new one. And that took all my patience so I couldn't do more than 5 minutes today, just verifying who I was.

Maybe I can get more done tomorrow, like plug in how many kids I have.

We usually get back $2000-$3000 but we owed $500 this year. That's not terrible but it would have been worse if I had not had an additional amount withheld every pay period. We had our CPA do some projections last year based on the new tax rules and she recommended that I withhold an extra $125 per pay period. Our income was actually down this year and we owed more taxes.
