I just started this today! I used The Lorax by Dr. Seuss to tie it into pollution/cutting down trees in the rainforest, and the kids seemed to get it. I thought it might be over their heads, but they started to talk about seeing big buildings in NYC with lots of black smoke coming out.

I am going to try to do T/W Connections for the next few days, and found all the books that Debbie Miller mentioned in this section of RWM, but I am not sure how they will work out. I have Fly Away Home, The Lotus Seed, How Many Days to America?, and Smoky Nights. To be honest though, a lot of these books have to do with with hard-hitting issues such as homelessness, persecution, rioting, etc. and I'm afraid it will be too much for my kids or not something they've had a lot of experience with...

I'm hoping someone will recommend another book that's worked for them!

Thanks for the tip on the Lorax. I think T-World connections can be one of the most difficult (for first grade). I agree that some of the topics can be rather deep for that age. It all depends upon their maturity levels and what they have been exposed to. I tried to use Fly Away Home last year but my kids don't have a schema for a LARGE airport. Without that mental image, it just didn't work.

Thanks, miss anderson... I used The Lorax today.
I think it went well. I don't think I'll spend too much time on this concept though. I feel so behind already.

I agree, liketeaching1, it is a hard concept. Their concept of the world beyond their own home is limited.
When some of them attempted the text to world connection they were more like text to self.

This past week we read How Many Days to America by Eve Bunting, and my students made a connection from this book to Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks, they were fighting for their freedom and stading up for themselves and then they also connected it to the pilgrims (which is a more obvious connection), they left their home and traveled by boat to get to America where they would be FREE!

New connection?

We have worked on the Text to connections recently. I have a blank paper up on the wall where students can write the title of their book and their own name under the appropriate Text to... self, text, world connection.
Yesterday I was in a meeting and my para read a story to the students. When I got back one of my little ones said- Today we made a text to movie connection when we read that book. So do you think we should add that as a new connection?

This is the same student who when asked what do I mean when I say to you put your finger on the text responds- that's what my mom does on her cell phone.

My students in 3rd and 4th grade are ESOL students. They come from everywhere and most of them quickly made a text-to-world connection with the kind of trip they took to arrive in the United States. Many came from Cuba and just like the people in the story used a boat.

We use Grace for President. It works well since the election is coming up in November.
