Craft Question
Old 12-18-2018, 02:12 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #1

So, I found this idea online where students take a clear candle holder, with a candle inside, and on the outside attach tissue paper. The directions said to use modge podge. Has anyone done something similar with glue instead? How did you do it? Do you spread glue on the candle holder and then attach the tissue paper? Or do you put the glue on tissue paper?

I've never used modge podge before and when I was at the store, there where all these different types and the directions were saying to use multiple coats and then there was supposed to be like a final coat or something and it sounded like you used a different type for that, but I wasn't sure. I was very confused. Of course, it's also very expensive, and the candles holders I got are the really tall ones, as those were the kind the store had.

I already got the supplies, so I'm pretty stuck (minus the modge podge), but if anyone can help, that would be great!

Thanks!

I expect you can attach the tissue paper with watered down Elmer's glue. Brush it lightly onto the glass, lay the tissue paper pieces, and then brush more thinned glue on top.

I do this with random pickle jars. Just water down plain old Elmer's and have the kids use paintbrushes to apply a light layer to the glass, then stick the tissue paper onto it. Then brush a another layer over the top to seal it. I cut tissue paper into 1X1 squares. They overlap the squares to make a mosaic effect.

Modge Podge is thick and hard to work with. This process is easy enough my Kinders do it.

Great, thanks everyone! I'll use watered down glue!

Another question. You mentioned a moasic effect. If they wanted, could they cut the tissue paper into Christmas shapes? Like stars, trees, candy canes, etc? Or should it just be squares?

ModPodge is essentially one part glue to one part water. Iíd use that recipe for the undercoat, but Iíd spring for the real stuff for the overcoat. Itís $7-8 and one bottle will last you forever. It seals everything. Fair warning, ModPodge is dangerous. Once youíve used it, thereís no going back. Youíll be ModPodging left and right.

What should the glue mixture look like? Should it be white? Clear? How thin/thick?

I just eyeball it...water it down until it spreads thinly. And it washes right out of the paintbrushes with hot water and soap. Don't let it dry!

I dunno if the shapes would show up because of overlap and would be hard to cut from tissue paper. Worth a shot?

1/2 glue, 1/2 water 1 to 1 ratio. I would do a sample before I tried it with the kids. I always did this to see if it works.
