Does anyone have any fun strategies that they use for b's and d's?

with "making a bed." Put your fists together, bent fingers touching, thumbs up. That makes something like a bed shape with thumbs as head and foot boards. Reading left to right the "b" or /b/ of bed is thumb on left, finger loop on the right--making the shape of a lower case b. The right hand makes the shape for a lower case d and is at the end of both the fists together "bed" and the word bed.

Some teachers use a picture of a bed to help reinforce this. You can use lower case letters with a pillow and maybe covers lightly added to the picture.

Kids can put their fists together and check if they used the right shape for b or d when they write or read. After awhile they don't need the physical/visual cue.

Look up Mr. Beady Eyes. I canít attach a brawling but the students write a b and d right after almost touching. Those become his glasses, then make a face with beady eyes. My students doodled that drawing on their spelling tests and writing papers.
Hope that helps, my students loved him last year, and it did improve this problem.

I always show my first graders that a lowercase b can become a capital B and a d cannot. Works most of the time.
