I'm just looking for a list of writing units people cover throughout the year and in what order...trying to get a general idea of what I might want to cover and looking for ideas to get inspired.

We start out with storytelling (Talking, Drawing, Writing), teaching some directed drawing lessons, mini lessons about adding more details to the PICTURES in a sketch book.

This moves us into Small Moments in a journal (used to get the Really Good Stuff journals--this year we're trying spiral notebooks).

Then we move onto stapled books (Already Ready or About the Authors...can't remember which!) but still in the Small Moment kind of genre.

Last we go into non-fiction writing....basically true facts about animals but I encourage kids to write about other things they know a lot about, too (playing a sport, camping, taking care of baby brother or sister, etc.).

The powers that be would like to see us do poetry but...really?

And Malibu Barbie----have I got something for you---you and I are SO much alike....have you seen Regie Routman's book, "Teaching Kindergartners to LOVE writing Poetry"???? It is fabulous and I would never teach poetry any other way. You've got to get the book--it's a small, easy to read book and I do this in April, after spring break when they've got some good skills under their belts. You will not believe how wonderful their poetry will be! It will change your mind about poetry and kinders...sure did mine!

Thanks Jacque! I will have to look that book up. Seems to me I had it for first grade but it's been piled away since I moved back to Kdgn 3 years ago. I'm very excited! If you can do it, I can do it and so can my kinder kiddos!
